News of Varna and District
The local I3oy Scouts held a
skating party at the local rink
on Friday evening last.
A friendly hockey game was
played last Saturday mornin
between the Varna and Bayfield
Junior hockey teams.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson Webster
are spending their holidays in
Florida.
ANNUAL MEETING
The United Church held its
annual congregational meeting
on Wednesday evening of last
week. Excellent reports were
given by the various departments
of the church and the treasurer
reported a substantial balance on
hand to start the new year.
A vote of appreciation was
tendered to the pastor, Rev.
Murdock Morrison, also a pres-
entation was made to Mrs. Rob-
ert Stirling, who has been organ-
ist for the past twelve years.
Robert Taylor and William
McAsh, on behalf of the con-
gregation,
ongregation, presented her with
two plaques and Miss Debra
Stephenson, on behalf of the
choir, presented her with a
lovely glass candy dish. Mrs.
Stirling thanked the congrega-
tion in a few well chosen words.
UNITED CHURCH WOMEN
The United Church Women
held their January meeting in
the Church last Thursday even-
ing with the president, Mrs.
William Dowson, who opened
the meeting with prayer, in
chare. The U.C,W. Con-
vention theme song was sung
with Mrs. Robert Stirling at the
piano.
Group one were in charge of
devotions with Mrs. Ida Mc-
Clinchey leading, who gave the
reading "and I said to the man
who stood at the gate of the
year" and took as her topic "The
Open Door." Mrs. Joe Postill
read the scripture lesson.
Mrs. Robert Taylor spoke on
"Hospitality, " Mrs. William
McAsh on "opportunity, " and
Mrs. Louis Taylor on 'Faith."
Mrs. William Taylor and
Mrs. Robert Webster sang a num-
ber of duets in keeping with the
topic. A letter of thanks was
read for the collection of used
stamps.
The roll call was answered
by twenty-five members. Forty-
two visits were made to sick and
shut-ins during the past month.
A life membership certificate
and pin was presented to the
retiring president, Mrs. Charles
Reid. Mrs. William Dowson
presented the certificate and
Mrs. John Ostrom presented the
pin.
Officers for the coming year
are: past president, Mrs. Charles
Reid; president, Mrs. William
Dowson; vice president, Mrs.
Ralph Stephenson; treasurer,
