Mr. and Mrs, Ted Steinback spent New Years in Detroit with Mr. and Mrs. Morley Witmer. Lambert Witmer who had been there returned home with them. Mr. and Mrs. Dori Oke and family spent the past week trav- elling through Northern Ontario. Mr. Ray McKinnon and fam- ily, Halliburton spent a week visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Herb Turkheim and family, also vis- iting with all their Zurich friends Miss Donna Merner, London England, is enjoying a three- week holiday with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Merner and other relatives. Mrs. Stewart Deitz is a patient in Victoria Hospital, London. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pulford and family, London, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Oxland and family, Kitchener, and Mr. and Mrs. Arn Meyer and family, Kitchener were holiday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Haberer. Mrs. Anne Turkheim spent the Christmas and New Year's holiday at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Batstone and fam- ily, Richmond Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Johnston are enjoying a months vacation in Florida. 0 Policy Set For Retirement at 65 Separate school teachers must retire at age 65 under terms of a policy set by the Huron- Perth Separate School Board at a meeting in Stratford on Decem- ber 19. Because some_persons on the instructional staff now are over 65, the policy will take effect gradually over three years -- age for retirement in 1970 will be 68, in 1971 it will be 66, and in 1972 and thereafter it will be 65. In other business, the board agreed to a plan to provide fluoride dental treatment to Huron County students. Such a plan is already' id operation in Perth. OFFICER PRESENT EVERYONE WELCOME Sponsored by the Youth Fellowship Department Suggests Replacement For DDT Which Is Now Banned The recent ban on DDT should not cause crop growers much of a problem in Ontario, except possible where the control of cutworm in corn is concerned. So says Professor Harold Goble Department of Zoology, Univer- sity of Guelph, who notes that even for cutworm DDT was not recommended here in 1969. Among the replacements of DDT are a group of insecticides known as the organophosphates. This group contains some very effective, yet very dangerous to handle, materials. Two that are still being widely used and are unaffected by the recent ban are parathion and Phosdrin. Methoxychlor, endosulfan (Thiodan) and carbaryl (Sevin) will also be more widely used. These last three are relatively safe to use as far as the operator PAGE SEVEN is concerned, and none should pollute the atmosphere if prop- erly applied. Professor Goble points out that growers should be as well in- formed as possible on the hazard: of using organophosphates. Rub- ber gloves, respirators, and protective clothing are required before some applications can be made. Growers should be sure to enquire about the need for such protective clothing when they purchase hazardous chemicals.
