Zurich Citizens News, 1969-12-04, Page 20PAGE TWENTY ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1969 Irish Tempers Flare at Lucan -Zurich Game Tempers flared amongst the players and spectators alike on Sunday afternoon in Zurich as the Dominions and the Lucan Irish battled to a 2-2 tie, in OHA Junior D action. The tie left Zurich crew in second place, a few points behind first -place Exeter Hawks. With a little more than five minutes to play in the second period a fight erupted in the stands, and the referees halted play. Both teams were sent to the dressing rooms and the bal- ance of the period was played along with the third session. Two goals in less than four minutes midway through the first period gave the Irish a 2-0 lead, which they managed to hold on to until the 5.27 mark of the third. John McKinley broke the ice with his goal on a pass from Bob Cook, and then midway through the period Cook scored unassisted to tie the game Zurich Flyers Open Schedule With 27-0 Win Over Brussels; Host Blyth Friday* The Zurich Flyers opened their season in WOAA Inter- mediate C Minor competition on a winning note last Friday night when they ran rough shod over Brussels to the tune of 27-0. The next home game for the Friday Flyers is this F y ri ynrght when n they play hosts to the Blyth Merchants, the team which they eliminated in the group finals last season. Zurich carne up with eight goals in the first period, and then banged in eight more in the second session. A grand climax they scored 11 more in the third period. Bill Chipchase, with eight goals, and Scott Burton with seven, paced the Zurich attack. Ken Smale was next in line with four, while Bob Carlile and Bob Merner scored two each. Bob Johnston, Earl Wagner, George Suplat, and Larry Bedard each flashes the red light once. Rick Jeffrey earned the shut -out in the Zurich net, easily turning aside the few shots that were fired at him. Dominions Dump Mitchell 8 -1; Rich Schilbe Injured The Zurich Dominions on Tues- Loader and Kevin McKinnon, who were sitting out one -game sus- pensions due to their game mis- conduct penalties in the Sunday game against Lucan. A total of 26 penalties were handed out in the game, with 16 of them going to Mitchell. In- cluded in their total were a 10 - minute misconduct and a game misconduct. to Glen Nicholson. Led by Bob Cook with three goals, and Stu Mustard with two, the local crew had little diff- iculty with the Hawks, as they banged in two goals in the first, three in the second and three more in the third period. Mitchell took a temporary lead at 13.08 of the first period, but before the session had ended Rich Schilbe and Stu Mustard had both found the range to give Zur- ich a 2-1 lead. Cook scored two of his three goals in the second period, and Ron Corriveau came up with the extra marker in the same frame. After Schilbe suffered his in- jury in the third period, the Dominions carne up with three more goals, off the sticks of Cook, Stirling, and Mustard. Both Mustard and John McKin- ley picked up three assists in the game. The local crew played without the services of John About People You Know... Mr. and Mrs. Morley Witmer, Detroit, spent the American Thanksgiving holiday, with Mr. and Mrs. Ted Steinback, Miss Inez Yungblut spent a couple of days last week with relative in London. Christian Gascho, one of the oldest residents in our village celebrated his ninety-sixth birthday on November 19. We join in wishing him continued health and happiness. Word has been received of the death of Maggie (Well) Wagner, 90 years old, a former resident of Zurich , passed away in Oter- Bein Home Hospital, Lebanon, Ohio. Mrs. Wagner is survived by a daughter (Vera) Mrs. Wayne Rardau, a brother, Homer of Montreal, three grandchildren and one great ggrand-daughter. Burial was in United Methodist Cemetery, Capac, Michigan, 0 Zurich Bantams Win. Two Games over Adastral Park (by Doug Turkheim) Last Friday night the Zurich Bantams travelled to Adastral Park and came back with anoth- er 9-0 win. Peter Hesse and Pat Bedard were the top scorers for Zurich as they each collected a hat trick. Gerald Weido added two more and David Cyr scored once. Zurich scored twice in the first, three tunes in the second and added four more before the game ended. There were three penalties called in the game with Zurich drawing all three. ANOTHER 9-0 WIN Last Wednesday night the Zur- ich Bantams blanked Adastral Park with a 9-0 win. Gerald Weido was the big man for Zur- ich as he had a hat trick. Defence em an Bill Bedard scored two goals from the point, along with Pat Bedard, who also scored twice. Singles went to Ron Rader and John Mommersteeg, At the end of the first period Zurich had a convincing 5-0 lead then added two more goals in the second and third periods. First period marksmen for Lucan were Jeff Craig and Mille Ander- son. Stellar netminding on the part of Gary Geoffrey kept the Lucan crew from scoring oftener in the first half of the game, and then in the last period the situat- ion was reversed when Jerry Free- man blanked Zurich on Many tries that should have been sure goals, and only two got by him. The refereeing in the game was probably the worst seen in the league this year. For no reason whatever, John Loader was giv- en a misconduct and then a game misconduct penalty in the first period. Both referees missed numerous infractions which shouts have resulted in penalties, and called penalties on players who did not deserve them. In the second period Kevin McKinnon was given a mis- conduct and then a major mis- conduct, when he objected too strenuously on a penalty called against Bill Taylor. Five-min- ute majors were also handed out to Taylor and Jim Hearn, of the Irish, for their display of fisti- cuffs late in the second period. The third period saw both clubs settle down and play good fast hockey, with only two minor penalties being called, both to Lucan, Of the 22 penalties hand- ed out in the game, Zurich drew 12 and Lucan 10. The next game at home for the locals is this Sunday after- noon at 2 p. m, when they en- tertain the Lambeth Flyers. Lam- beth handed the Dominions their last elefeat before their five - game undefeated streak, and the locals will be out for revenge in this game. On Friday night the Dominions visit Exeter and take on the first -place Hawks. Bruins Register Win in House Play (by Doug Turkheim) On Saturday morning in House League play the Leafs and the Hawks battled to a 4-4 tie. The leaf attack was led by Greg Love who scored twice while Gary Rau and Derek O'Brien each scored once. Richard Mommersteeg also scored twice and singles for the Hawks went to David Clarke and Danny Meidinger. There were six penalties hand- ed out with the Leaf's drawing two and the Hawks four. BRUINS WIN Wayne Clarke scored twice and Billy DeGroot once to give the Bruins a 3-1 win over the Canadiens. The Canadien's goal was scored by Paul Robin- son. There were two penalties called in the game with the Bruins collecting both.
