HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1969-11-20, Page 12PAGE TWELVE Dominions Blank Belmont 4-0 Host Mitchell Sunday Afternoon ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1969 The Zurich Dominions came up with their best showing of the season last Saturday night when they travelled to Belmont and shut out the undefeated Sunsets, 4-0, The victory gave the locals a tie for third place in the six -team league, with the Mitchell Hawks. Unlike previous games, when the Dominions ran into a flock of penalties, the boys played hockey all the way and only picked up four penalties. They skated hard and checked well throughout the entire 60 minutes. Gary Geoffrey came up with a sensational game in the Zurich net and well deserved his first shut -out of the season. He turned aside 25 shots. Meanwhile his team-mates peppered 46 shots at Mike McLaughlin in the Bel- mont net. The Dominions carne up with one goal in the first period, add- ed two more in the second and picked up the final tally in the third session. John McKinley got the locals off to a flying start at 7.31 of the first period when he went in alone and pulled the goalie for a picture goal. At the 14.58 mark of the second period, Stu Mustard capitalized on a neat passing play fron Ron Henry to shoot the locals into a 2-0 lead, and 34 seconds later Ron Corriv- eau made it 3-0 on a pass from Rich Schilbe. The fourth Zurich goal, in the third period, was sort of a gift when a Belmont defencernan deflected the puck into his own net, with Aubrey Bedard being given credit for the score. Belmont drew a total of 15 penalties, seven of then in the, third period. Last night, Wednesday, the Dominions played host to the same Belmont crew and on Sun- day afternoon at 2 p.m. the big game of the season is on tap, when the Mitchell Hawks are the visitors. This game could well be a battle for third spot in the league standing, LAMBETH 5 - ZURICH 4 Last Wednesday night in Lam- beth, the Dominions lost a real heart -breaker when they were edged out 5-4 in the dying min- utes of the game, by the Lam- beth Flyers. Early in the second period the Dominions held a 3-0 lead. The Dominions came up with their first goal of the game mid- way through the first period when Rich Schilbe banged in a pass from Ron Corriveau and Ron Henry. Fives minutes later Stu Mustard made the score 2-0 Juniors and Intermediates Play In Exhibition Game; Flyers Win by 9-8 In a well -played exhibition game last Sunday afternoon the Zurich Flyers of the WOAA In- termediate C grouping edged out the Zurich Dominions of the OHA Junior D grouping by a score of 9-8, Only two penalties were called in the game, both ' to the Flyers. The Dominions'rang up an early 4-0 lead in the first period, before they finally started to tire following their game the night before with Belmont. Add- ed to this was the fact that three or four of the regulars were mis- sing from the Juniors line-up. Near the end of the first period the Flyers roared back strong with two goals, and then in the sec- ond session they out -scored the Dominions 4-1. Both teams scored three times in the third 'period, and even though the Dominions pulled their goalie they failed to come up with the Action Begins In House League Play The Zurich House League action got under way last Sat- urday morning in the local arena, with the Canadiens defeating the Leafs 6-5 and the Hawks coming through with a 6-3 triumph over the Bruins. Peter Corriveau sparked the Canadiens in their victory with two goals, while Doug Eckel, Stepzen Bedour, Gary Love and Wayne Schilbe each scored one. Derek O'Brien and Greg Love were the big guns for the Leafs with two goals each, while Larry Smith picked up the extra goal. The Leafs went ahead 3-2 in the first period, but saw their margin slip in the second session when the Canadiens outscored them 3-1. Both teams scored once in the third, Stephen Haberer, with five big goals, led the Hawks to their 6-3 victory over -the Bruins. Wayne Meidinger scored the extra goal. Wayne Clarke scored all three goals for the Bruins. The Hawks took a 3-1 lead in the first period, and increased it to 5-3 by the end of the sec- ond. They added their final score in the third. equalizer in the dying minutes of the game. John Loader, Mel Hohner and Kevin McKinnon each scored two Soals for the Dominions, while hane McKinnon and John Mc- Kinley both registered once. For the Flyers, Ken Smale, Grant Walker and Fred Wells scored two goals each, while Bob Car- lile, Bob Merner and Bill Chip - chase each blinked the red light once. The Dominions played without the services of Bruce Schoenhals and Ron Henry on defence, as well as Rich Schilbe and Fred Armstrong on the attacking units. 0 Crediton Tigers Down Flyers, 11-5 The Crediton Tigers downed the Zurich Flyers 11-5 last Fri- day night in an exhibition game playedinthe Zurich Arena. They took a 5-3 lead in the first period, increased it to 9-3 by the end of the second, and then added their final two goals in the third session while Zurich came up with two more counters. Grant Walker was the big gun in the Zurich attack, banging in three goals, while Scott Burton and George Suplat each scored one. For Crediton, Bob Pinter flash- ed the red light five times, with Fred Lamb coming through with three goals. Dennis Morrissey, Bob Doherty and Craig Chapman each scored one. Both teams were short-handed for the game, with Crediton only using eight players and Zurich 13. There were six penalties call- ed in the game with four of them foing to the Flyers. A meeting was held in Clinton on Tuesdaynight to draw up a schedule fr the grouping in which the Zurich crew will be playing this winter. The schedule will likely get under way within the next week or two. The second period was only 25 seconds old when Schilbe scored his second goal of the game, unassisted. At this point Lambeth came to life and bang- ed in three quick goals to tie the score at 3-3. With only 48 seconds left to play in the period Henry scored from Mustard to give the Dominions a 4-3 lead. At the seven -minute mark in the third period Larry Little tied the score at 4-4, and then with only two minutes left to play Gary Evans scored his second goal of the game to give Lambetl a 5-4 victory. A total of 34 penalties were handed out in the game, with Zurich drawing 16 of them. Glenn Gascho played goal for the Dominions when it was dis- covered that some of Gary Geo- ffrey's equipment was missing. Zurich out -shot the Flyers 34-15. AUSTRAL FANCY -14 OZ.
