TOUR EUROPE - Herb Turkheim, publisher of the Citizens
News, accompanied the 178 persons who travelled to Zurich,
Switzerland, on a charter plane. While there he travelled
with three other men, left to right, Lloyd Hey, of Crediton,
Ory Wallis, of Watford, Homer Hall, also of Watford. On
the extreme right is Fred Lins, of Lucerne, who accompanied
the four as a guide and chauffer. The group are seen here
as they pause outside a restaurant near Zurich, Switzerland.
Good Milking Is
Important Practice
(This message brought to your
home through the courtesy of
Hensall District Co -Operative.)
Research shows that good milk-
ing practices and herd manage-
ment save time, cows and mon-
ey. Yet the milking operation
is often the most inefficient
operation on the farm.
Sometimes this is because the
milking is left to the most in-
efficient man on rhe farm. Some
times it happens because the
milking equipment isn't kept in
top operating shape. Check your
own milking operations against
these points.
have you too many milking
machine units in operation at
each chore time? This results
in over -milking and actually
training the cows to be slow
milkers.
One man should operate no
more than: 2 bucket type units,
or 3 pipeline units in a stanchion
barn, or 3 pipeline units in a
tandem parlor, or 4 pipeline
units in a herringbone parlor.
The proper number of units
allows your vacuum pump to
operate more efficiently also.
Do you prepare the cow for
milking by washing the udder
for at least thirty seconds? Use
a strip cup or black plate to de-
tect abnormal milk before you
attach the teat cups. Milk Heif-
ers first and leave infected cows
last.
Attach the milker units within
one minute after you wash the
udder.
When the milk flows cease,
pull down gently on the teat
cups and this allows the opening
of the teat cavity and remove
strippings. Break the uacuuni on
the cups and remove them gently.
when milking is completed.
Dip teat ends in disinfectant
solution after milking is done.
If you follow these simple steps
with each cow, you will find you
cannot handle more than the rec-
ommended units.

Meet At Pennings
(by Rita Pennings)
The seventh meeting of the
Zurich V, 4-H club was held
October 14 at Rita and Toni
Pennings home.
All members were present and
answered to the roll call, "why
I choose my Free Choice art-
icle" and colour scheme.
The "free choice" article along
with the "learning stitches"
article is to be handed in for
Achievement Day in Zurich on
November 29.
Francis read the minutes of
the last meeting which were
approved. We decided to let
the next meeting wait a few
weeks to allow members to fin-
ish any uncompleted work.
Plans for achievement Day
were discussed at this meeting,
and it was decided to do a dem-
onstration in which Cathy and
Darlene will participate.

FIRE THE LOAFERS FIRST.
Then, feed the rest the best—
a Shur -Gain Dairy program.
When you recall that an average cow costs
you the price of 2 tons of hay and over 32
tons of corn silage per year, you know there
is no room in your herd for loafers that won't
produce or even potential producers that
can't because of inadequate feed intake.
Ship the loafers—keep the producers—start a
Shur -Gain feeding program.
Increase your returns from your total
investment in feed with a sound program
from Shur -Gain.

Dairy feeding program to fit your particular
