The new minimum of $1.30 hourly became effective October 1 for the hotel, motel, resort, restaurant tavern and taxi bus- inesses. It and other improved employment standards became effective in other business and industry last January 1. Lbour Minister Dalton Bales said the shift in emphasis would be for a few weeks only. Mr. Bales said he decided to concentrate on the low-wage service industries after consult- ation with Earl Ilowarcl, Director of the Department's Employment Standards Branch. "In the course of the past nine months we have found, "he said, "that most employers willingly meet their obligations under the new employment standards leg- islation. ' The hotel, motel, resort, rest- aurant tavern and taxi industries were exempt the past nine month: from the $1.30 minimum wage which became effective in Ont- ario last January 1, when the new Employment Standards Act be- came law. Because it was felt the full im- pact of the new minimum wage could have serious financial repercussions for these industries, it was imposed in two stages, to give ample time for adjustment. During the first nine months of the year, the required minimum for experienced employees was $1.15 hourly, Since the new legislation be - carne law the Employment Stand- ards Branch of the Department has collected $871, 887 for 30, 69i employees throughout the pro- vince, who bad been underpaid, Mr. Bales said. He said that branch inspectors have carried out 5, 592 inspect- ions to make sure employers pay minimum wage, overtime pay, vacation pay or equal pay for equal work for men and women,.
