REC LEAGUE CHAMPS - The Barber Boys last Wednesday night
won the Zurich Rec League softball championship, when they
eliminated Charlies in a thrilling. 11 -inning marathon. Back row

Overholt, Larry Bedard, Hubert Schilbe, Carl Finkbeiner, and

Barber Boys Win Rec League Playoffs
A towering home -run by Eric
Smale in the 11th inning with
the bases loaded gave the Bar-
ber Boys a 17-16 victory over
Charlies in the fifth game of
the Zurich Rec League playoffs,
last Wednesday nig at in Dash-
wood, and gave the Barbers the
series, four games to one. By
virtue of their victory the Bar-
ber Boys won the Citizens News
trophy for Rec League Champion-
ship.
Smale's drive in the second
extra -inning session was his
third hit in the game. He had
previously come through with a
double and a triple, to lead the
Barbers at the plate. Bob' Johns-
ton, Bob Merner, Jim Bedard,
and Dave McNair each hit safely
twice, while Shane McKinnon,
Larry Bedard, Phil Overholt and
Aubrey Bedard all hit safely
once.
For Charlies Richard Schilbe
was the big gun at bat with
three hits while Gary Flaxbard,
Ray Finkbeiner, Kevin McKinnon
and Jerry Rader each had two.
Dave Stark and Richard Turkheim
both added single hits.
Charlies jumped into an early
lead in the first inning when
they scored three big runs, and
then they increased their lead
to 5-0 in the second. The Bar-
bers came back with two big hits
in their half of the second, but
then again in the third Charlies
sent another man across the plate
The Barber Boys came back with
two more runs in their half of
the third, and then after holding
Charles off the score sheets in
the first of the fourth, they came
up with three hig runs in their
half, to give them a 7-6 lead.
Charlies produced their best
effor in the sixth when they
shoved seven runs across the
plate, and drove Barber's pitch-
er Shane McKinnon off the
mound. The Barbers kept work-
ing away on the lead and scored
three runs in their half of the
sixth, and then added three
more in the eighth to tie the
score.
Both teams played tight ball
for a few innings and then in
the llth Charles came up with
three big runs which looked like
enough to give them the vic-
tory. But the roof fell in during
Mr. and Mrs. Menno Steckle
have moved into the home form-
erly occupied by Mr. and Mrs.
Soper.
Mrs. Christina Hartig, visited
with Mrs. Anne Turkheim for a
few days last week.

the route for Charlies, giving
up 15 hits and striking out five.
