CONSERVATION 1Y1:1:1< ENDS
Sunday, July 13, marked
the close of conservation
week in Ontario, but area
conservation events were
just beginning.
The first event to be held
in this region was a series
of canoe races and demon-
strations held on the new
Parkhill reservoir Sunday,
July 13,
These events were just a
prelude to the GreatAusable
Canoe race to be held this
weekend.
The demonstrations were
put on by members of the
London Canoe Club to ac-
quaint people not familiar
with canoe racing the orooer
way to handle a canoe in a
race.
Bob Vincent, a director of
the club, used a special rac-
ing canoe to demonstrate
how to handle the canoes. The
canoe is much narrower than
the regular canoe and is
designed for racing only. At
its widest point it is only a
little over 24 inches across.
The racing canoe is much
harder to handle than the
regular canoe. In racing,
obstacles not normally en-
countexed while canoeing are
present. How to overcome
these problems was the sub-
ject of Mr. Vincent's demon-
stration.
