Many Owners of Swimming Pools
Break Law With Lighting System
Hundreds of pool owners across
Ontario are breaking a law de-
signed to save their lives, says
Ontario Hydro.
They have swimming or wad-
ing pools which have under-
water lights not equipped with a
device for detecting ground
current leakage_ The device,
called a ground fault current
interrupter, is intended to cut
the flow of power instantaneous-
ly if a slight amount of current
leakage occurs.
Installation of GFCIs became
mandatory last year. Under
provisions of the Ontario Electric•
al Code, all new public and
private pools built after May 1,
1968, with underwater lighting
had to have a GFCI installed.
But owners of pools which ex-
isted before that date were given
until November 1, 1968 to have
the device installed. This is
where the problem comes in,
says Ontario hydro which is
responsible, through its Electrical
Inspection Department, for en-
forcement of the Ontario Elect-
rical Code. Because older pools
with lighting have never given
any problem, owners feel they
are safe. But older lighting
systems are more likely to break
down due to deterioration of
equipment.
GFCIs are also compulsory on
electrical circuits which are
within 10 feet of a pool.
Failure to comply with the
regulations governing pool
lighting can result in a fine of
not less than $25 and not more
than $500 for each offense.
Once installed, the unit must
be tested prior to each use of the
pool. A button located beside
the unit's main switch will cut
the power flow when depressed,
ensuring the circuit breaker is
mechanically sound.

Tigers Win First
Dashwood Tigers won their
first game of the season Sunday
afternoon by nipping St. Marys
6 to 4. The wet weather has
forced several games to be
cancelled.
The game was tied at four
runs each going into the ninth
inning when the visiting Tigers
rallied for two runs and held
St. =Marys scoreless in their
final bat. Bob Hoffman doubled
to start the ninth. He was safe
sliding into third when the St.
Mary's pitcher elected to try and
erase him, instead of going to
first, toget the batter, Jim
Hayter. A sacrifice fly to centre
field by Bill Schade scored Hoff-
man with the winning run and
moved Ilayter to second.
Denomme was safe on an error
and Hayter moved to third where
he scored from on Pete Ravelle's
long fly ball.
Dashwood was•lecl at the plate
by Jim Hayter with three singles.
Bob Roffman and Pete Ravelle
both had a double and single.
Dave Ratz who picked up the
win in relief and John Hayter
also bad singles.
All St. Mary's runs were un-
earned.
