HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1969-06-05, Page 16PAGE SIXTEEN ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 1969 Gingerichs Down Charlies in Rec League; Barbers Win First Game Brothers Richard and Gerald Shantz combined together to pitch Gingerichs Sales and Ser- vice into first place by winning, their fourth straight game and giv;ng Charlies Auto Sales their first: loss of the season in Rec League softball last Wednesday night. Randy Decker hurled the nine innings for Charlies suffering his first loss although 110 did throw a tremendous game allow- ing Gingerich two less Bits than Charlies but came out on flu: short end of the runs being de- feated 21 to -C'. Tout' Bedard took a lead in the home rugs for the league recording his third in the seventh inning. Charlies took a two to one lead in the first inning, but fell' behind in the third :ts Cingeriehs found a couple of runs and left Charlies scoreless in the second and third, Doubles by Glen and John Gaseho helped give Gingerichs four ruffs in the top halt of the fourth. Charlies soon tied things up again in the bottom of the inning collecting five runs on doubles by Ray Fink- bciner and Jerry Rader, Tt was a see -saw battle frcin start to finish. The excitement was in the last inning as Charlies came up to bar facing a six run deficit trying to tie things up. Ray Finkbeiner with a double- and Rand) Decker with a triple brou- ght in runs. Schilbe drove a hard hit ball to Shantz on the mound, the ball fell out of his dove and popped right in second baseman Tony Bedard's glove for the third out to give Gingerichs their fourth straight win, Charlies led by Garr 1'laxbard with five hits and Ray Finkhcincr with four, outhit Gingerichs by two. Charlies played without the services of two of their top performers, Lave Stark and Kevin McIinnon and felt quite sure that once they meet Ginger- ichs with a full team they will have little difficulty beating this tough club. James Ramer led Gingerichs with four hits and a triple, double and two singles. Lloyd Lostell and Gerald `Shantz each slammed out three hits. Ile said he was part- icularly' eoticcrned now that he learned the National Art Centre in Ottawa has 19 sump pumps installed in the basement to keep rhe waters of the Rideau Canal out. Reeve Roy Westcort, Usborne, chairman of the property comm- ittee said the water problem was 001 entirely licked, but so far, there is only one sump pump in the basement of the administrat- ive building.
