FOR QUICK BREAD
Crown your eating enjoyment
from morning to midnight.
Perfect for the beginner or
experienced cool:, loaf breads
are made from a basic shorten-
ing, sugar, flour, and baking
powder recipe varied by adding
fruits, juices, dates, nuts, spice
or cheese. Terrific hot or cold,
they improve in flavour after
a day or two. Food specialists
at MacDonald Institute, Univer-
sity of Guelph suggest serving
them with butter, jams, or
cheese. Use them at breakfast,
for sandwiches, or for afternoon
teas or snacks.

GARDEN GUIDE
Annuals will have more vig-
orous growth and more abundant
bloom when flower beds are
given proper preparation, say
horticulturists with the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food. Annuals will thrive in a
soil of good fertility. The
ground should be well supplied
with organic matter.
As soon as the soil is workable,
spread rotted manure or compost
over the beds. Peat moss, supp-
lemented with a complete
commercial fertilizer at the
rate of two pounds per 100 square
feet, may also be used. Spade
or fork this in so that it is
thoroughly mixed with the soil.
This digging also loosens up and
aerates the soil. Before trans-
planting seedlings, carefully
level the bed with a rake, to
remove large lumps. The re-
sult will be a smooth bed ready
for planting.

Everyone Welcome
For the holiday the weather
was not favourable, not a
spring day pleasing to be out on
an outing, still it did not pre-
vent people from satisfying;
themselves by leaving their
hone and motoring away to
find contentment.
At the present perhaps the
farmers are the most unfortun-
ate ones, their work being de-
layed by wet and broken wea-
ther, and naturally that takes
away the enjoyment of their
way of living. With time, they
too will find adjustment. Re-
gardless of as aforesaid of a
wet holiday and weekend in
the business place of St. Joseph,
which has recently been decor-
ated making it attractive to the
public, each department was
kept busy by the management,
the Hogg family, and each
department was rewarding. Why,
because they are pleasing to all
and ready to give their best
service to all who come in con-
tact with them. Motorists and
others, give them a try .and be
convinced.

CITIZENS OF ZURICH AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES:
Retarded children
need your help so very much:
In Canada, one child in every
thirty is born — or is destined to
become — mentally retarded.
[hat's more than 17,000 each
year.
And each one needs special
care and attention.
Your locale Association for
Retarded Children is doing all it
can in the way of providing the
necessary training and guidance
to help these unfortunate young-
sters grow into useful, happy
citizens.
It is vital work. And you are
invited to help.
All we ask you to do is plant
these seeds in your window box
or garden. Then plant a seed of
hope for the retarded children in
your neighbourhood by giving as
generously as you can to the
Retarded Children's Association.
Your thoughtfulness
and donations will pro-
vide help and hope to
those in our community
who cannot help them-
selves.
