Hoffman, along with the Misses F. Kalbfleisch, M.A. Lamont and O. O'Brien, attended the teacher's convent- ion held in Exeter on Saturday. Mrs. Mary Kochems of Zurich had the misfortune to slip on the sidewalk one day last week, and as a result had the mis- fortune to break an arum. A new salary schedule for teachers has been set up with the following rates: first year, $800, second year, $900 and third year, $1000. After this there will be a yearly increase of $50. Henry Kraeger of the 14th concession recently delivered a fine calf to Dashwood for slaugh- ter. Although it was only 16 months old it tipped the scales at 1040 pounds. W. Colles, the new manager at Molson's Bank in Zurich, arrived in the village on Monday morning to assume his new dutieE A. E, Hemphill has purchased the drug store property in Hen- sall which he has been renting for the past few years. W. E. Goodwin, who has rec- ently returned home from over- seas, has accepted the position of manager of the Jackson Man- ufacturing Company in Ilensall, 40 Years Ago MAY, 1929 The school in Dashwood is closed this week due to an epidemic of scarlet fever in the community. Noel Laporte and couple of young ladies from the Bluewater highway, motored to Goderich one afternoon recently, where they spent the time visiting and shopping for necessities. The council of the village of Hensall have imposed a special by-law forbidding the sale or setting off of fireworks within the village limits. The new oven built for Everett Haist, Zurich baker, is now completed and a small fire is lit in it each day for a couple of hours to dry out the mortar, Much headway is being made on the new home of Ivan Kalb- fleisch, being built in the west- erly limits of the village of Zurich. The Hensall firemen are look- ing forward to May 24, when the big celebrations they have planned will be run off according to schedule. 25 Years Ago MAY, 1944 Dr. P. J. O'Dwyer, the phy- sician in Zurich, has traded off his old 1937 model car on a brand new Dodge, and he is well deserving of the new con- venience, since he travels a great many thousand miles in a year. The new artesian well being dug in Zurich by the Davidson well drillers has finally reached its goal at 285 feet. An ample supply of water has been found at that depth to supply the needs of the village, Heralded Dy critics as one of the best entertaining groups to ever tour Canada, the Lifebuoy Follies will be presented in the Town Hall this Friday night, under the auspices of the local Red Cross branch. The Exeter board of education along with the school teachers have agreed to set up a curfew that w111 require all children under 16 to be off the streets - oF- YFARS GONE - BY - by ten o'clock every evening. Grain seeding in the area has just been completed during the past few days, despite the many weeks of cold wet weather which has plagued the area.. About 16 girl friends of Miss Edna Petsky gathered at her / home in Hensall to honour Miss June Kennedy who has left for hew new home in Hamilton. 15 Years Ago MAY, 1954 The baseball season will open in Zurich this Friday night, when Strathroy will be providing the opposition for the locals. Mrs. Lorne Rader of Zurich was the lucky winner of a new Admiral television set at the stock ear races in Ailsa Craig on the holiday afternoon, Sixteen farmers in the Dash- wood area staged a work bee on tate farm of Carl Oestreichcr, and worked up 15 acres of land ready for seeding. Mr. Oestrei- cher has been unable to work due to a severe gash in itis leg. The wedding of Doris Elizabeth Armitage and Dr. B. Eickmeler took place in tVinghant at the home of the bride's parents. The couple will live in Exeter where the groom has established a dental practice. Mr. and Mrs, John Heal have taken up residence in Hensall in the Fink apartments, which recently has been vacated by - Mr. and Alrs. Jack Tudor, 10 Years Ago MAY, 1959 Final plans have been made for the annual Ladies Nite of the Zurich Chamber of Commerce, which will be held in Grand Bend, and at which time Tom Daley of CFPL- TV will be guest speaker. Work on paving the Goshen Line between Zurich and Dash- wood highway is to be complet- ed by this fall. A six-year old Dashwood boy, Charles Irvin, was killed last Wednesday afternoon while riding his bicycle home trona school, when he was struck by a car. Douglas 'Meander, who has been on the staff of the Bank of Montreal in Zurich, has been advised of his tranfer to Hanover, and he will be leaving in the very near future for his new location. At their annual meeting last Wednesday night, the Hensall Kinsmen elected Ross Jinks as president for the coming term. He succeeds Harold Knight. A director of the Zurich Agricultural Society, Bert Klopp is staging an all-out effort to rebuild the Zurich 4-H Calf . Club, Which has dropped badly in the past few years. He has called a meeting of all interest - Obituary MRS. GEORGE TRUSS A native of Zurich, Mrs. George Truss passed away in Sr, Joseph' s hospital, London, on Monday, May 12. She was the former Olive K. Prang and was '78 years old. Surviving are one son, Chester, London; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Oliv e) Givlin, London, and Mrs. Stewart (Jean) Mitchell, R. R. 6, Strathroy; one sister, Mrs. Ellen Thiel, Zurich. There are also six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral service was held in the George E. Logan funeral chapel, London, on Thursday, May 15, at 3 p.m., conducted by Rev. T. L.
