QUES TIONS
1. What do the terms conact,
residual or septemic, mean when
referring to chemical action on
insects?
2. Can you name a time when
you should apply a crabgrass
preventer to your lawn?
3. Is one application of fertilizer
a year enough for a lawn?
ANSWERS
1. A "contact" insecticide begins
o work as soon as it strikes an
insect. It controls aphids and
other sucking insects which cannot
e controlled by residual insecti-
ides. A residual insecticide coats
the foliage or leaves a residue of
heroical on the leaves. It con-
rols insects that chew foliage, su-
as tomato hornworm and Japan- •
ese Beetles. A septemic insecti-
cide enters the cell plant structure
and kills insects that feed on
tissue. They control mites and
aphids for example. (NOTE: All',
insecticides should be used with

2. Tori can add special chemic-
als at time of seeding a new lawn,
and these are often included in
lawn fertilizer. Or else you can
apply it to your lawn before soil
temperature rises to 60 degrees F.
that is approx. early to mid May.
depending on the spring). It is at
this temperature that crabgrass
eeds begin germinating.
3. Depending on the type of
grass, and the type of fertilizer
you use, you might get by with
one application of 4-5 pounds of
actual nitrogen per 1,000 square
feet of lawn. But you would have
to use a slow nitrogen release
fertilizer to do it this way. You
would be better to apply fertilizer
at least twice,, and maybe four
times a year, at a lower rate of
application each time.. The total
nitrogen applied this way should
amount to about 5 pounds per
1,000 square feet each year.
Frequent application at lower
rates, ensures plant food is avail-
able at critical periods for grass
growth and root maintenance.
