MARCH, 1919
Mr. and Mrs. John Walper are
moving to Harrow. where Mr.
Walper had accepted a position
with a firm.
The village of Hensall is try-
ing to have a branch of the Jack-
son Manufacturing Company of
Clinton established in their mun-
icipality.
W.F. McLaren has purchased
the brick store in Hensall from F.
W' Smallacombe, and will move
his hardware store into the premises
as soon as he has it remodelled.
Melick and Braun are taking
over the hardware business in
Zurich formerly known as Hartleib
and Faust, and will be open for
business after Saturday.
The Zurich hockey team went
•over to Exeter and soundly defeat -
de the team in that town by a 12-6
score. They might easily have
beaten thein 20-6, as the Hoffman
trio were the stars of the game.
Ira Tieman of Dashwood has
accepted a position with the Bank
of Commerce, and began his
duties this week.
40 Years Ago
MARCH, 1929
Mrs. W.C. Wagner, of Zurich
accompanied by Mrs. Simon
Sararas of Cromarty, attended
the funeral of the late Harold
Bender, in Detroit last week.
Orville Witmer, of the Babylon
Line, has taken a position with
N. W. Trewartha, of Clinton, in
the produce business:
Fairburn and Hudson, of Hensall
have leased from A. C. Edighoffer
in Zurich the property known as
the former Commercial Hotel
barn, and will operate a garage
business thereon.
The road from Hensall to Zur-
ich is rather undecided this week,
as we. noticed George Thiel, Zur-
ich livery operator, use his auto-
mobile one day and then back to
the old stage pulled by a team of
horses for the following day.
James Sangster has been very
busy in Hensall the past weeks
renovating the interior of the
Bank of Montreal building, which
was in much need of repairs.
25 Years Ago
MARCH, 1944
Harry McAdams, while on his
way to Monkton to visit at the
home of his wife's parents, was
taken seriously ill, and had to be
rushed to Listowel hospital, where
he underwent surgery.
The police village trustees in
Zurich have decided to drill an-
other well, which will be of eight
inch diameter instead of four
inches like the old one is at pre-
sent.
LAC Howard Klumpp of Dash-
wood was at home with his par-
ents for a few days before leaving
for overseas.
A well-known Zurich Business-
man for many years, William C.
Wagner passed away early Wed-
nesday morning in his 74th year.
Harvey Coleman, well-known
farmer in Stanley Township, re-
ceived severe burns to his face and
arms when a stove in a colony
house at his farm exploded while
he was cleaning and spraying in
the building.
The Kalbfleisch planing mills
are now back in operation after
their recent drastic fire which
completely destroyed their build-
ing. A temporary set-up has been
made in their former flax mill,
and the shop is now again in a
position to serve their local cus-
tomers.

MARCH, 1954
Oscar Klopp. well-known Zurich
pusinessman, is at present spend-
ing several months in the sunny
south, at Florida.
Mr. and Mrs. George Ingram
have taken up residence from
their farm in Hay Township in
the home they purchased in Hen-
sall, and prior to leaving the farm
they were given a farewell party
by neighbours and friends.
The Township of Hay have ap-
pointed. Len E rb as warble fly
inspector at a rate of 80 cents
per hour, and also awarded the
contract for spraying for warble
fly to William Watson, at a sum
of 20 cents per head.
Keith Lindsay, who has been on
the staff of the Bank of Montreal
in Hensall for the past two years,
has been transferred to Goderich.
The ratepayers of Grand Bend
will be able to vote on whether
they approve the issuing of deb-
entures in the amount of $85,000
to purchase Grand Bend Hydro
system from the Ontario Hydro
Electric Power Commission .

The Lucky Dollar Food Market
in Zurich, which has been oper-
ated for the past number of years
by Menno Oesch, has been pur-
chased by Clarence Gascho.
Several subscribers of the Hay
Telephone System from Grand
Bend attended the annual meeting
of the organization in Zurich,
asking the Hay council to move
swiftly towards installation of dial
telephones in Grand Bend.
Debentures ranging from $100 to
$1, 000 in value are being offered
locally for the new St. Boniface
School, presently under construct-
ion in Zurich.
The.WMS of Hensall United
Church conferred a life member-
ship to Mrs. George Hess, for her
many years of faithful service to
the organization.
Teachers at South Huron High
School have been offered salary
increases which will amount to
slightly over $22,000 for the,en-
tire staff.
Stanley Township council, at
their March meeting, approved
additions to the high school at
Clinton which are to cost in the
neighbourhood of $328,000.
Flames fanned by strong winds
on Thursday night completely
destroyed the farm home of Mr.
and Mrs. Fergus Turnbull, about
three miles north of Grand Bend,
on he Bluewater highway.
