Zurich Intermediates Playing Close Series Peewees Take First Game;
The Blyth Merchants and the'
Zurich Flyers keep things tied up
after four games played in the
best -out -of -seven WOAA Interme-
diate "D" semi-finals. Each team
has four points, with two ties and
a win.
The fifth game of the series was
played last night (Wednesday) in
Zurich and the sixth was not
scheduled before press time. If
the series should go the full ex-
tent, the seventh game will be
played in Zurich Sunday afternoon
at 2 p.m.
The winner of the Blyth -Zurich
series will go on to meet Monkton
Wildcats who shut out Ripley in
three straight games.
Biyth 3—Zurich 3
Bob Carlile scored a goal at
19:28 of the second period to force
a 10 -minute overtime period in the
fourth game •of the series,
There were. no goals scored in
either of the third or overtime
periods. Zurich's big chance came
to go ahead in the game when
Blyth's Larry Boyd drew a penalty
at 4:30 of the overtime period but
were held back by the Merchants'
strong defence and goal tending.
Each team scored once in the
first period, with Jim Pfaff scoring
at 2:14 for the Flyers. Twenty
seconds later Larry Boyd picked
up the puck from centre ice and
skated into Zurich's end to beat
goal -tender Gary Geoffrey.
-The Merchants took a 3-1 lead
in the second on two goals. scored
10 seconds apart by Jim Stewart
and Larry Boyd, with his second
of the night. At 11:35 Zurich
came back in the game with Bob
Merner scoring on a pass from
Johnston, and then with only 48
seconds left in the second period
Carlile, scored the tying goal.
The game was kept well under
control with only eight penalties
being called, six being interference
calls.
Zurich 5—Blyth 5
Bob Carlile scored a goal with
less than a minute left to play in
overtime to give the Zurich Flyers
a 5-5 tie with the Blyth Merchants
Sunday afternoon in the third
game of the series.
The Flyers coach, Greg Willert,
pulled goal -tender Gary Geoffrey
from the net in the last dying
minutes of the game to allow an
extra attacker which paid off. Dick
Bedard scored on a pass from Bob

irst Game of Rec League Playoffs
The Zurieh Kings drew first
blood in their best -of -five series
with Dashwood Bears in the Zur-
ich Recreational Hockey League,
when they edged them 5-4 last
Thursday night. In the other half
of the double-header, the Hensall
Generals edged Zurich Juveniles
6-5.
Action resumes in the Rec
League at the Zuric Arena tonight
(Thursday), when Dashwood and
the Kings battle it out at 7 p.m.,
and Hensall and the Juveniles
clash at 9 p.m.
Zurich Kings 5— Dashwood 4
Paced by Bob Johnston with
three goals, the Kings were behind
only once in the entire game.
Dashwood took an early lead in
the first period, when Stan Lovie
scored unassisted at the 1:45 mark.
At the 15 -minute mark Bob John-
ston scored his first goal on a
pass from Bob Merner, and then
a minute and a half later he
scored againwith the assist going
to Paul Corriveau.
With only 16 seconds gone in
the second period, Larry Lovie
scored for Dashwood to tie the
game at 2-2. Midway through the
session Dick Bedard rifled a shot
from the blueline to give the Kings
a 3-2 lead. Neither team managed
to add to their total for the re-
mainder of the period.
Bob Hoffman tied the scored for
Dashwood at the 5:58 mark of the
third period, but five minutes later
George Suplat scored one of the
nicest goals of his career when he
grabbed the puck behind his own
net, stick handled. his way through
the entire Dashwood team, and
then deked the goalie. One min-
ute later, Larry Lovie scored his
second goal of the game, unassist-
ed. With only four minutes left
in the game, Johnston scored his
third goal of the night on a beau-
tiful passing play with Suplat, to
give the Kings the margin they
needed for the victory. Both

ins Junior "DB Scoring Crown
Reg Thomas, of Lambeth Flyers,
captured the Ontario Junior "D"
scoring championship with a
league high 35 goals and 19 assists
for 54 points.
According to official statistics
announced Thursday, Thomas fin-
ished with four more points than
second -place Dave O'Donnell, of
Mitchell Hawks. O'Donnell had
17 goals and 33 assists.
Lambeth's Barry Fuller took goal-
tending honors with a 2.79 goals
against average in 19 games.

A total of 16 penalties were
handed out in the game by ref-
erees George Sweeney and Jim
Bedard, with each team drawing
eight.
Hensall 6—Zurich Juveniles 5
Bill Chipchase led Hensall to a
6-5 victory over the Juveniles in
the first half of the Thursday night
double-header, with three big goals.
Murray Baker, Bob Carlile and Bill
Taylor each scored one.
Chipchase and Baker both scored
for Hensall in the first period, be-
fore Paul Hesse found the range
for Zurich. In the second period
Chipchase scored his second and
third goal, and then the Juveniles
took over banging in three markers
in less than five minutes. Aubrey
Bedard, Rich Schilbe and Paul
Hesse, with his second goal of the
night, scored in that order for
Zurich, to tie the count at 4-4.
With two minutes left in the sec-
ond, Bob Carlile blinked the red
light for Hensall, and then with
only 45 seconds left Ron Corri-
veau scored for the Juveniles, to
tie the game at 5-5.
The two teams battled on even
terms 'throughout most of the third
period, until Bill Taylor registered
for Hensall at the 16:50 mark, to
salt away the victory.
Only five penalties were called
in the well -played game, with
three of them going to Hensall
and two to the Juveniles.

In the first period each team
accounted for one goal, with Bob
Johnston getting the first Flyers'
goal at 7:45, Five minutes later
Blyth's Larry Boyd scored to end
the first period scoring.
The Flyers spotted Blyth a 2 -
goal lead in the second period
then struck back for two unan-
swered goals to even the goals at
three apiece with ten minutes left
in the third. At the 11:50 mark
Blyth went ahead in the game,
until Bedard's goal for the Flyers,
which forced an extra period.
E. Daer and K. Lee were Blyth's
second period marksmen. Larry
Boyd scored his second goal for
Blyth in the third, while Ed Daer
scored his second goal of the game
in the overtime period.
Bob Johnston, Dick Bedard,
Barry Bloch, Ken Smale and Bob
Carlile were Zurich goal getters.
There were 12 penalties called
in the game, Blyth drawing eight
and Zurich the other four.

Zurich came up with a thrilling
54 victory in overtime to win the
first game of the series last Wed-
nesday night in the Zurich Arena.
Blyth had taken a 2-0 lead in the
first period, and increased it to 3-1
by the end of the second. Zurich
came to life in the third and forced
the overtime session.
Robbie Lawrie and Ken Lee reg-
istered for Blyth in the first peri-
od. Ed' Daer scored another for
the Merchants in the second ses-
sion, before Jim Pfaff came through
for the Flyers.
Bob Johnston scored for Zurich
early in the third period, and then
five minutes later Bob Carlile tied
the score at 3-3. One minute later
Barry Bloch scored on a long drive
from the blueline, to give Zurich
what looked like the winning goal.
But with only two minutes left in
regulation time, Ken Daer beat
Paul Steckle from close in, to force
the overtime session.
Ken Smale emerged as the hero
of the game in the overtime when
he capitalized on a neat passing
play with Bloch and Pfaff to score
the winning goal at 6:05.
Only six penalties were handed
out in the game, with four of them
going to Blyth and two to Zurich.
Blyth 6—Zurich 3
Ken Lee, with three big goals,
sparked the Blyth crew to :a 6-3
victory in the second game of the
series on Friday night, on their
home ice. The Merchants scored
three in the first, added two more
in the second, and .came up with
their final tally in the third period.
Along with Lee, Ed Daer scored
two for Blyth, while Ron Henry
accounted for the extra marker.
George Suplat and Bob Johnston
scored first period goals for Zur-
ich, and Bob Merner added the
third, in the second period.
Of the five penalties called in
the game, three went to Blyth and
two to Zurich.

The Zurich Peewees won their
first game of a two -out -of -three
series with Ilderton Peewees by
a score of 7-6
The Ilderton squad took a 3-1
lead in the first period on goals
by Brian McNeil, scoring twice,
and Tom Davis scoring once.
Gerald Weido scored the lone
Zurich goal of the first period.
The two teams battled to a 44
tie at the end of the second peri-
od. The locals went ahead of Ilder-
ton, 4-3, on three goals scored by
Pat Bedard. Gerald Weido and
Bill Bedard •drew assists on Pat Be-
dard's second period goals. Ilder-
ton's Brian McNeil scored his third
goal of the game at the 15:30

Leading Series
Against Blyth
This last week -end saw "The Big
0" from Hensall suffer two seri-
ous setbacks in their bid for the
championship.
"The Big 0" 2—Blyth 2
Friday night in Hensall t!he third
game of a best -of -five series got
underway. "The Big 0" of Hen-
sall forged ahead at 1:20 •of the
first period on a goal by Jamie
Caldwell unassisted. Thus, "The
Big 0" lead et the end of the
period. •
In the second period David
Rodgers scored on a pass from Ron
Plunkett at the 4:40 mark. The
score remained even until 14:12
of the third period when Steve
Knight scored on a pass from
Jamie Caldwell putting "The Big
0" out in front.
The Blyth squad had been giv-
ing it everything they had and at
the 17:52 mark of the third period
Brian Miller evened the score on
a pass from David Rodger. At the
end of regulation time, the score
remained tied.
A ten-minute overtime period
followed in which both teams tried
hard, but were unable to change
the scoreboard.
"The Big 0" 1—Blyth 5
Sunday afternoon in Blyth "The
Big 0" went to battle again. This
time they suffered their first de-
feat. The first period got under-
way and not until 13:25, David
Rodger scored for Blyth on an
assist from Ron Plunkett. Six
minutes later the same two teamed
up to put Blyth out in front with
a two -goal lead.
The second period saw the same
hard action, and at 14:10 David
Rodger scored again with Ron
Plunkett assisting, and a minute
later, 15:20, David Rodger scored
on assists from Ren Plunkett and
Donald Carter. At the end of
the second period, Blyth 4, "The
Big 0" zero,
The action during the game
rivalled the NHL for thrills in the
way the boys were trying, and at
the 3:11 mark Brian Miller scored
on a pass from Kenneth Ritchie.
This put Blyth in the lead with
five goals, end as the period
seemed to be running out of time,
"The Big 0" managed to get one
past the Blyth netminder at 17:15,
Danny Winsor, unassisted.

in the first ten minutes of the
third period, scoring three goals,
Bill Bedard scored at the one -
minute mark, Kim McKinnon
scored at the 6:50 mark, and Derek
O'Brien rounded out the scoring
at the 9;45 mark for the locals
in the third period, snoring what
turned out to be the winning goal
of the game.
Ilderton's Brent Harvey scored
two blistering slap shot goals, com-
ing one minute apart. Harvey
scored one goal at the 10:00 min-
ute mark, and the the other goal
at the 11:00 minute mark, to end
the scoring for Ilderton.
There were five penalties hand- .
ed out in the game with three
penalties going to Ilderton and
two to Zurich.
These same two teams will meet
Friday, March 7, at 7:00 o'clock
in the Babe Siebert Memorial

Zurich Mites Lose
To Exeter Squad
Ron Bogart's Mites team from
Exeter, Tuesday night tirmmed
the Zurich Mites 6-1 in an exhibi-
tion hockey game played here in
Zurich.
The Exeter club came out flying
in the first period to out -score the
home team four goals to zero. It
wasn't until 11:30 of the second
period that Exeter was able to
score the lone goal. Each team
scored once in the final stanza,
with '-Paul Haggitt firing in Zur-
ich's only goal.
Exeter goal -getters were Perry
and Paul Pooley, with two each,
and singles went to Dave Bogart
and. Brad Taylor.
