GB Council Seeks Fire Prevention Survey
At .its latest meeing, Grand Bend
eouncil passed a resolution asking
the fire marshal's office to conduct.
a fire prevention survey for the
village.
All council agreed it was an
ideal time to have the survey com-
pleted. The survey will cover every
(phase of fire protection in the
summer resort from fire hazards,
equipment, facilities, strength of
the volunteer brigade and adaption
to the new waterworks system be -
ling 'installed.
Reeve Orval Wassmann said,
"There is real value in having the
survey done now. We need to

A delegation from the volunteer
fire brigade attended the meeting
and made a request for additional
equipment and told council of the
changes that will be necessary for
adaption to the new fire hydrants.
The delegation that included
assistant fire chief Harry Hamil-
ton and Roy Hanlon and Jim Con-
nolly also asked that a qualified
instructor from a city fire depart-
ment be obtained to teach the
local firemen.
They were told this would prob-
ably be included in the survey by
the provincial department.
The firemen are also being asked
to elect their fire chief, deputy
chief and two captains by secret
ballot. In previous years they
were appointed by council.

Huron County Road Department Gets
Approval For Overtime Exemptions
(by Shirley J. Keller)
County engineer James Britnell
told Huron County council at Fri-
day afternoon's session that the
minister of labor has given 'his ap-
proval to have snow plowing come
under regulation 370-68 regarding
maintenance.
At the January session, Britnell
had advised council of the serious
implications in the new labor regu-
lations where overtime for county
road employees was concerned.
Council had agreed to petition the
minister of labor and the director
of employment standards to have
the regulations revised to include
snow plowing under the defini-
tion of "maintenance".
Britnell told council he now an-
ticipated little variance in over-
time hours until perhaps Decem-
ber when severe snowstorms could
again cripple the county.
"1 think most everyone agrees
that snow plowing accounts for
about the only overtime hours,"
remarked Britnell.

Regional Government
Frank McFadden, reeve of Bay-
field,
ayfield, who chairs the special com-
mittee to study the regional gov-
ernment question, reported on a
meeting with J. O. E. Pearson, co-
ordinator of the regional studies
program, and S. J. Clasky, director
of the municipal research branch,
department of municipal affairs.
Although the committee has ac-
cepted an invitation from Perth
County to discuss the subject of
regional government, absolutely no
commitments have been made with
any party with regard to it.
To date discussion has been gen-
eral with the provincial represen-
tatives Pearson and Clasky, both
indicating the province is quite
willing to listen to any proposals
on the subject. Any future legis-
lation would hopefully be flexible
to incorporate local situations.
McFadden did ask all reeves and
deputy reeves for their co-opera-
tion in a "very comprehensive
study of the administrative struc-
ture both at the county and the
local level".
"The committee believes quite
sincerely if such a study is carried
out, this information will farm the
