Care Must Be Taken In Choosing
Proper Variety Of Strawberry Plants
For high yields and bong -lived
plantings, it is necessary to plant
healthy plants. Officials of the
Ontario Department of Agriculture
and Food recommend that "eerti-
fled stock" of the Ontario straw-
berry plant certification program
be used each year when a new
planting is made.
These plants are produced under
strict regulations designed prim-
arily to control viruses. Experi-
ments have shown that virus dis-
eases can seriously reduce straw-
berry plant vigor and yields even
though infected plants often show
no special symptoms of being dis-
eased. Regulations governing "cer-
tified stock" are also designed to
control nematodes, red stele, cycla-
men mites, verticillium wilt, and
Hog Producers
Protest in!porting
Huron County Hog Producers
Association unanimously approved
a resolution Tuesday asking the
Ontario Hog Producers .Association
to protest the importation of low-
priced U.S. pork and pork products.
Prices are lower than those re-
ceived by producers in the prov-
ince, they said.
The Ontario association was also
asked to use its influence for the
creation of a single provincial farm
organization.
Alfred Warner, of Goderich
Township, a zone member of the
Ontario Hog Producers' Marketing
Board, said the association's month-
ly newsletter, Marketplace, will
cease publication due to the in-
crease in postal rates which add
$14,000 annually to operating costs:

For Pea Pro acts
tute of Ontario, Vineland Station,
must be attached to each package
as a guarantee that the plants have
been certified.
Look for the words "Ontario
Certified" in advertising to be sure
of getting plants from the Ontario
program. The term "virusdree",
"disease-free", etc., cannot be used
in advertising Ontario "certified
stock". These terms are mislead
ing because plants produced under
field conditions cannot be guaran-
teed free of viruses or other pests.
The regulations of the Ontario
program are at least as strict as
those of other provinces or states.

tained from the ,Horticultural Re-
search Institute of Ontario, Vine-
land Station, of the Farm Products

ment of Agriculture and Food,

The Honorable William A Stew-
art, Ontario Minister of Agricul-
ture and Food, announced this
week that a plentiful food program
for canned and frozen peas will
commence immediately under the
direction of the Ontario Food
Council, whose full resources will
be utilized to promote awareness
of the excellent value and avail-
ability of canned and frozen peas.
Mr. Stewart attributes the abun-
dant supply situation to a loss of
markets for frozen peas in the
United Kingdom, due to devalua-
tion, as well as above-average
yields in most pea -producing prov-
inces.
Retail distributors have been re-
quested to feature canned and
frozen peas as "good buys" during
the next two months. In the past,
retail organizations have fully sup-
ported plentiful food programs,
and there is every reason to be-
lieve they will fully support this
one by using various promotional
methods.
Mr. Stewart stated that ministers
of agriculture in other pea -produc-
ing provinces were being asked to
institute similar promotional pro-
grams. Peas are produced and
processed in British Columbia, Al-
berta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and
Prince Edward Island.
If this program is to be a total
success in stabilizing the supplies
of canned and frozen peas before
the 1969 crops are contracted, all
provinces concerned must put their
weight behind an intensified pro-
motion approach, said the minister.
