Care Needed In
Electrical Wiring
At Christmas
There's nothing like a blown
fuse to darken the festive sea-
son—unless it's standing around
watching firemen hose down
the living room, while the
Christmas tree goes . up in
flames.
As the Christmas shopping
budget gets thinner and thin-
ner, householders tend to ignore
warning signs on lighting equip-
ment for indoor decorations and
outdoor holiday displays, The
tendency is often to say, "It's
good enough for another year,"
one to many years in a row.
"Safety should be part of
everybody's holiday prepara-
tions," says R. C. Walsh, of Lon-
don, electrical inspection super-
intendent for Western Ontario.
"All wiring should be checked
carefully for signs of wear, par-
ticularly that used on Christmas
trees. Trees dry out quickly
in homes and apartments and
become real fire hazards unless
watched very carefully."
"If a lighting set has frayed
wires, cracked or brittle insula-
tion, broken lamp sockets or
damaged plugs, throw it away,"
he suggests.
"Another sure sign of trou-
ble is when a fuse blows after
the lights are turned on."
If trouble persists after the
fuse has been replaced and
new equipment purchase d,
switch to less heavily -loaded
circuits. Two further things to
remember, Mr. Walsh warned,
are never to use fuses of more
than 15 amperes capacity, or
indoor light sets for outdoors.
A useful tip always is to
check whether the lighting
equipment carries a rnark indi-
cating it has been approved by
the Canadian Standards Asso-
ciation.
There were 4- ,611 new cases
of tuberculosis reported in Can-
ada in 1967. There were also
826 relapses. Both figures were
higher than in 1966.
( hristmas is the perfect time to count
our many, many blessings. High on our List is the
confidence and good will you've showed us. So to you, out patrons,
we're extending a cheerful, hearty holiday "thanke

The 'Canadian Tuberculosis
Association at its annual meet-
ing changed its name to the
Canadian Tuberculosis and Res-
piratory Disease Association.
The change is in recognition of
the growing threat to health of
a range of other respiratory dis-
eases chief of which are emphy-
sema and bronchitis, which to-
gether now kill twice as many
Canadians as tuberculosis.
