50 Years Ago
OCTOBER, 1918
R. M. Geiger and E. J. Hess
have returned home to Zurich
from the University of Toronto,
which is being closed for a few
weeks due to an epidemic of
Spanish influenza.
F. W. Gladman, barrister of
Exeter. has been appointed as
chairman of Hay Township for
the coming victory loan cam-
paign. and he already has been
in the area looking for suitable
canvassers.
Dr. Peck, of Hensall, has been
assisting Dr. B. Campbell, of
Zurich. in attempts to keep the
current rash of influenza from
spreading worse than it already
is. At present there are a total
of 150 cases reported in Hay
Township alone.
On Sunday another bright
young man passed away at the
Sauble Line, in the person of
Narcisse Alphonse Masse, who
was in his 23rd year. The de-
ceased was taken ill with the
rash of influenza which is mak-
ing its rounds at present.
Schools and all churches in
Dashwood are closed to the seri-
ous epidemic of Spanish flu,
which is making the rounds
throughout the country, and
taking many lives with it.

OCTOBER, 1928
The local chopping mill, oper-
ated by the Williams family, is
running exceptional Iong hours
at present in an attempt to keep
Tip with the increased demand
or their popular flour.
Ross Johnston. of Blake, re-
turned home after spending the
past few months in the western
provinces of Canada.
Richard Robinson and family,
of Stanley Township, left for
the west last week, after spend-
ing some months in the area.
Mr. Robinson intends to dispose
of a car of apples he sent out,
and plans to return and pack
another car of the later variety.
Wedding bells are ringing to-
day. Miss Mildred Hoffman to
Mr. Leroy O'Brien, both of the
village of Zurich.
An interesting business trans-
action took place in Zurich when
Wellington Johnston sold his
meat market business to George
Deichert, who has been working
with him for the past year.
25 Years Ago
OCTOBER, 1943
The voting to provide water
supply to the residents of Zur-
ich at an estimated cost of
$4.000, was held on Saturday
and overwhelming support to
the project was given by those
who voted, with 72 in favour,
as compared to 11 opposed.
The commercial fishermen •at
Bayfield have been reporting
some excellent catches of perch
in recent weeks, and the bass
have been biting real good off
the pier at the same place.

of Hensall and Zurich are ar-
ranging a large frolic to be held
at Hensall this Friday night,
with all proceeds to help pack
boxes for the boys overseas
from the same areas.
The Centennial United Church
manse, London, was the scene
of a pretty wedding when Laura -
belle Wright, of Kippen, became
the bride of Orland David
Reichert.

OCTOBER, 1953
Mr. and Milne Rader have
moved from their home on
Goshen Street in Zurich to the
apartment building they pur-
chased from Ivan Willert, while
Mr, and Mrs. William Decker
have moved from their farm
into the residence they pur-
chased from the Raders. Mr.
and Mrs. Hubert Schilbe, who
had been living in the Rader
apartment building have now
moved into the apartment at
the rear of the post office.
The Dashwood Tigers on Mon-
day afternoon won the OBA in-
termediate "D" championship
against Orono, in the second
gauze of the best -of -three series.
Jim Hayter scored the winning
run in the tenth inning when
he crossed home plate on Dick
Regier's double.
Mrs. Joan Smith and children
have returned to their home in
Greenwood, Nova Scotia, after
spending some time with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
Merner.
Mrs. Gus Roche, a former
president of the Zurich Women's
Institute, was the guest speaker
at the Thanksgiving meeting of
the organization. .

OCTOBER, 1958
The Zurich Lumberkings on
Saturday won the all -Ontario in-
termediate "C" baseball title,
when they beat Latta 8-0 in the
second game of the series,
played in Plainfield, about 112
miles north of Belleville. The
championship marked the sec-
ond time in three years that
the Zurich crew won an all -
Ontario title.
Close to 500 residents of the
area crowded into the Zurich
Community Centre last Wednes-
day night to extend a welcome
to Dr. and Mrs. A. W. Klahsen,
the new doctor who has moved
to Zurich.
Oscar Greb, Hay Township
representative on the South
Huron High School board, told
the regular meeting of the group
that another school be built in
the area instead of planning an
addition to the present build-
ing. He added that a movement
was on foot in the Zurich area
to ask for another high school.
iBob White, who was the star
pitcher for Zurich in the finals
against Latta, was voted as the
most valuable player on the
team and was presented with
the T. L. Wurm Memorial Tro-
phy or his fine efforts.
