PARADE WINNER — This outfit
won first prize for the best pony and
cart in the school children's depart-
ment of the parade at the Zurich Fall
Fair last week. Known as the Hama-
ther Express, the pony and cart be-
longed to the two sons of Mr. and Mrs.
Bob Hamather, Zurich.
GRAND CHAMPION—Don Geiger,
RR 2, Zurich, exhibited the best beef
type calf at the 4-H Club competition
at the Zurich Fall Fair last week, and
also won the grand championship
shownmanship trophy. Don is shown
here being presented with a silver
waiter by director Herb Beierling, for

season. Highlights of his mono-
logue were: "I Dream of Jeannie

Dean. Laugh -In is hack for
those of you who missed the
conventions. I've been busy
this month entertaining the
Democratic 'Convention."
When referring to the Demo-
cratic Convention, he said, "or
how to blow the White House
without even trying".
Here are some of the high-
lights of the last Rowan and
Martin Laugh -In: "One way to
lower the divorce rate is to
issue a 30 -day beginner's li-
cense." "General DeGaulle is
good for France; General Fran-
co is good for Spain; so which
General is good for the United
States?" The answer was "Gen-
eral Motors".

One of the comedians said:
"My brother plays piano by
ear." "That's nothing," the
other said, "my uncle fiddles
with his navel."

50 Years Ago
OCTOBER, 1918
Miss Elizabeth Rennie re-
turned to London last week
where she resumed her teach-
ing at the London Conservatory
of Music. She will be in Zurich
on Thursday of each week teach-
ing vocal and piano,
William Walper, who has sold
his farm on the Goshen Line to
H. Gagstetter, has purchased
the farm south of Egmondville,
owned by J. 3. Merner, SMP, and
will get possession this fall.
The baby show held in con-
nection with the Zurich Fall
Fair produced a great deal of
interest, and among the win-
ners were babies of Mrs. Tinney
and Mrs. Ervin Willert. One of
the judges was Hay Township
reeve John Laporte.
Cook brothers in Hensall have
installed hydro power in their
premises to operate their flour
mills.
A sad death took place at
Drysdale on Monday when Eli
Gelinas, a respected farmer,
passed away at the age of 30
years.

OCTOBER, 1928
A citizen of the village com-
plains that the neighbor's chic-
kens are becoming a nuisance,
and would like very much if the
molesters were kept confined
to their own property, at least.
A record breaker of a bean
stock was found by William G.
Hess on the property of his
neighbor, Moses Geiger, when
he came across a stalk in which
they counted 157 pods in one
stalk. Every pod yielded about
six beans, so there would be
about 936 beans on the one
stalk.
The dates for the annual fowl
suppers is rapidly approaching,
and both the Lutheran and
Evangelical churches have
scheduled their events in Zur-
ich during the next two weeks.
Rev. J. Penrose, of Varna,
met with a painful accident on
Thursday when his car hit loose
gravel west of Brucefield with
the result that the vehicle hit
the ditch and over -turned, pin-
ning the clergyman underneath.
Mrs. Maude Hedden has on
display at the post office in
Hensall a large dahlia, which
measures 106 inches in height
and the flower 13 inches in di-
ameter.

OCTOBER, 1943
The council of the village of
Hensall set at their regular
meeting on Monday night a rate
of eight dollars per evening for
the use of the dance floor in
the town hall.
Mr. and Mrs. John Kaiser,
highly respected citizens of Hen-
sall for many years, celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary
on Tuesday, at their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Sylvanus Wit,
mer, of the Babylon Line, Hay
Township, announce the mar-
riage of their daughter, Marion
Ruth, to Corporal William Gib-
bons, of London.
A vote is to be taken by the
residents of the village of Zur-
ich, regarding a supply of water
for the residents.
The popular Dashwood band
furnished the music at the an-
nual Fall Fair in ilderton on
Wednesday of last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Edig-
hoffer and son Grant have re-
turned to Zurich from Grand
Bend, where the former oper-
ated a barber shop for the sum-
mer months.

OCTOBER, 1953
At the first supper meeting
of the new term of the Zurich
Chamber of Commerce, Albert
3. Kalbfleisch was installed as
the president replacing R. W.
Illsley, who has held the posi-
tion since its organization.
Mr. and Mrs. Ross Johnston
are away on a trip to northern
Michigan, an outing they are
well -deserving.
The funeral service for the
late John Durand was held at
St. Peter's Parish, St. Joseph,
on Monday morning, and was
conducted by t w o nephew
priests of the deceased assisted
by Father M. Monaghan, of
Zurich.

OCTOBER, 1958
The 1957 statistics for the
County of Huron show that
there are 3620 horses in the
county, worth the sum of
$457,200.
The Zurich Kin g s have
reached the finals in OBA in-
termediate `C' baseball, and will
now meet Lata, a town 12 miles
north of Belleville.
Members of St. Boniface
Church, Zurich, will hold a pub-
lic meeting on Monday night to
discuss the possibility of build-
ing a new separate school.
The Hensall Chamber of Com-
merce voted to donate $500 to
the debt against the artificial
ice fund in the village.
Jean 1VIeGregor, of Clinton,
was the lucky winner of a $100
draw conducted by members of
the Zurich ball club, with Jerry
Rannie selling the winning
ticket.
Two members of the Hay
Township Community Centre
board, Delbert Geiger and Ferd
Haberer, both resigned their
positions at a closed meeting of
the Hay Township council pre-
sided over by reeve V. L. Becker.
A reception was held in Zur-
ich for the new doctor who has
arrived, Dr. and Mrs. A. W.
Klahsen, and was attended by
400.
