Fox Bounties
Fox bounties came under seri-
ous discussion on Tuesday af-
ternoon when it was learned
that the agriculture and refor-
estation committee proposed to
reduce the fees to hunters from
$4 per animal killed to $2. It
was pointed out that the pro.
vincial government had with-
drawn from •a previous agree.
ment with the counties to pay
$2 bounty for each fox slain.
Several councillors questioned
whether or not $2 was sufficient
incentive to hunters who stalk
and kill foxes. Others won-
dered if the bounty should be
entirely withdrawn as is hap-
pening in other cotmties.
"We must have the bounty
hunters," insisted Goderich
reeve Herbert Such when it was
learned that a rabid fox had
entered a stable in Morris
Township, that two cattle had
died and more were 'sick with
rabies and that the fox had
gone into the silo after the
farmer who protected himself
with a fork.
In connection with this mat-
ter, A. D. Smith, reeve of Turn -
berry, expressed shock that the
cattle could not be given a
humane end but had to suffer
and die from the rabies. "Some-
thing should be done," he stated,
William Elston, Morris, said
that if the farmer is to be re-
imbursed for animals who die
of rabies it must be absolutely
certain that rabies was the
cause of death. Until the ra-
bies hits the brain of the ani-
ma land (the brain is tested
after death for positive inden-
tification of the disease) noth-
ing can be done.
"Can't they give something to
take away the pain?" asked
Elgin Thompson, Tuckersmith.
"You would think the Society
