The coldest night of the win-
ter was on Sunday night when
the mercury dropped to 22 de-
grees below zero.
The next frosty morning you
have to get out and shovel snow,
pour some machine oil on the
shovel. It will be found that
the snow will slide off the
shovel in grand style.

When a horse, out at pasture
or in the stall, is found stagger-

the pupils of the eyes dilated,
it is usually apparent that he

not agree with him.

Total $13,500 For TB Research
The use of Christmas Seals,
which provides funds for the
control of tuberculosis and
other important respiratory dis-
eases, produced record reven-
ues in Ontario this year. -An
interim report by the Ontario
Tuberculosis Association shows
contributions exceeding $1,309,-
000, almost 110,000 higher than
Montreal included manager
Jack Bannister, Douglas The -

DOCKING IN SPACE is
simulated in space capsules under
development by the Centennial
Centre of Science and Technology
in Metro Toronto. "Astronaut"
Faye Green is at the controls of
the prototype at the Centre's tem-
porary workshops. Four of these
mock-up capsules will simulate a
tricky docking rendezvous with a
model of an orbiting craft moving
across a closed-circuit television
screen. At the left, Anthony
Gerritsen, a Centre engineering
technologist, puts a "nose cone"
cover on the television guiding
system. Instrument panels, flash-
ing lights and beeping sounds are
built-in to heighten the effect of
space travel. The Centre, an inter-
connected cluster of three buildings
in advanced stages of construction
on a 20 -acre site, will be opened
late this year or early next year,
the 1966 Christmas Seal cam-
paign.
In Huron returns to date, a
total of $13,500 has been re-
ceived and contributions con-
tinue to come in, officials said.
Seventeen of the 47 provin-
cial district volunteer organiza-
tions which are co-ordinated by
the Ontario Tuberculosis Asso-
ciation, achieved more than 100
per cent of last year's result,
the highest being Grey county
district at 113% of the 1966
total. York, which includes
Metropolitan Toronto, was 107%
wth more than 155,000 individ-
ual contributions.
"The results of the 1967
Christmas Seal campaign, while
not yet complete, reflects a re-
awakening of public awareness
of TB as the number one in-
fectious disease — in. spite of
drugs and selective use of vac-
cines," said Dr. L. W. C. Stur-
geon, president of the Ontario,
"the problem of tuberculosis is
one of constant need for con-
trol in Ontario where 5,000,000
lack immunity to the disease
and at least 20 per cent of the
population carries the tubercu-
losis germ. Nearly 1,500 active
cases of tuberculosis were found
in Ontario last year and the
incidence of the disease is
especially high in the urban
areas," he said. "The concern
of the Ontario Tuberculosis As-
sociation with respiratory dis-
eases, other than tuberculosis,
is both broad based and grow-
ing," said Dr. Sturgeon. "It
stems from the high percentage
of lung and chest abnormalties
found in the course of tuber-
culosis case findings. We have
been particularly successful in
detecting heart conditions and
cancerous lungs, which are im-
mediately referred to- the fam-
ily doctor. Emphysema, bron-
chitis and asthma are three
other diseases with which the
association is involved," he said.
"While generally concerned
with air pollution as it relates
to respiratory diseases, we are
specifically concerned with
what we call "personal air pol-
lution," that is the detrimental
effects of cigarette smoking—
in relaion to cancer of the lung
andother respiratory ailments,"
Dr. Sturgeon said.
