HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1968-01-25, Page 8PAGE: EIGHT Zurich and Dashwood Play Tie Game In Thrilling Rec League Hockey Action (By Gerry Rader) Last Thursday night one of the best games in the Zurich Recreation League was played, when the Dashwood Bears and the Zurich Kings fought to a 5-5 tie. Zurich managed to collect four goals in the first period on goals scored by Dick Bedard, Bob Johnston, and two by Bob Merner. Dashwood was score- less in the first period, but were Zurich Peewees 'ii , i L se Last Wednesday night in Hensall, the Zurich Peewees went down to a stinging 9.3 de- feat at the hands of the power- ful Hensall six. Peter Jantzi, a former member of the Zurich team now playing for Hensall, accounted for four of his team's goals. For Zurich, Pat Bedard was the big wheel with two goals, while Billy Bedard accounted for the third. On Friday night the Peewees played an exhibition game against the Grand Bend team, and came out an the top of a 6-3 score. In the last period Larry Lovie, Jim Becker, Bob Webb and Bill Schade popped in four goals for Dashwood to put them ahead 5 to 4. With 54 seconds left in the game, captain George Suplat, of the Zurich Kings, scored the tying goal. Rick Jeffrey, in the net for the Braves, kept Zurich in the game. Shots after shots were fired at hien by Hensall, which were sure goals, but Rick kept kicking them out. Zurich score two goals in the first period, and Hensall were scoreless. Leo Ducharme and Dave Durand scored the Braves goals. In the second period the two teams were even with one goal apiece. Gary Maxwell scored for Hensall while Phil Overholt scored for Zurich. At the end of the second period the score was Zurich 3 and Hensall 1. The final period was a fast - skating one with Hensall scor- ing three goals to Zurich's one, in less than seven minutes. Eckel Dial 236.4611 Zurich wseesemwerwereeszeleseseie ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS Zurich Flyers Lose Close Game to Crediton; Play Blyth Friday Night In one of the best played in- termediate games of the season last Friday night in the Zurich Arena, the local Flyers were edged out 10-6 by the high -fly- ing Crediton six, Next home game for the locals is this Fri- day night, when they entertain the Blyth Intermediates in a regularly scheduled contest, Crediton took a 5-4 lead by the end of the first period, and increased it to 10-6 by the end of the second. In the third session the Flyers commanded Bruins Top Team In House League (By Shane McKinnon) Bruins 5—Leafs 4 The game was very close with both teams being tied until the last ten seconds of the game. Kim McKinnon put the winning goal in for the Bruins. The other goal -getters for the Bruins were Wayne Schilbe with one while David Schilbe scored a hat trick. The Leafs goals were scored by Bill Bedard with two while Ron Smith and Joey Kenda each scored singles. Canadiens 8—Hawks 6 The main factor in this game was the six goals scored by Gerald Weide for the Cana - diens. The other Canadiens goals were scored by Larry Smith and Jeff O'Brien The Hawks' goals were scored by Tom Robinson and Danny Schilbe. ' Champs See Hockey Game The Cardinals, winners of the Zurich Minor Baseball League, were sent to London to see the Nationals and St. Catharines. Canadiens 8—Bruins 7 Gerald Weido was the big gun for the Canadiens as he scored six times. DerekO'Brien scored two for the Canadiens in this close game. Pat Bedard counted three for the Bruins and Ricky Regier put two past the Canadiens' goalie. Fred Mommersteeg and Dave Schilbe each scored singles. the play and .outscored the vis- itors two goals to none. Glenn Overholt each scored twice, while McBride land J.im Morrissey accounted for the other tallies. Both teams picked up four minor penalties in the game, three of the Zurich total going to rugged Dick Bedard. The best crowd of the season was on hand to watch the game, 0 Minor Teams Win Several Games (By Shane McKinnon) Wednesday night the Zurich Midgets defeated Hensall in a close game, 54. The game was refereed by Bob Merner and Gerald Shantz. The Zurich goals were scored by John McKinley with two, while Richard Schilbe, Ron Des- jardine and Shane McKinnon scored singles. Pryde scored all four goals for Hensall. * * w JUVENILES LOSE Monday night the Zurich Juveniles lost to Lucknow by a score of 8-1. The game was a poor showing of hockey on be- half of Zurich. Paul Corriveau scored the lone goal for the locals. * * MIDGETS TROUNCE HENSALL Saturday night in the Hensall arena the Zurich Midgets de- feated Hensall 7-3. The Zurich goals were scored by Richard Schilbe with three, John Mc- Kinley with two, while John Corriveau and Ron Desjardine scored singles. * CLINTON BANTAMS WIN The Zurich Bantams were swamped Saturday night 10-0 by Clinton. The game was played in Clinton.
