HOT STOVE LEAGUE — Hockey talk was
likely second place here as old-timers from Zurich
and Lucan renewed acquaintances. From the left,
Don O'Brien and Bill O'Brien, both of Zurich, and
Bill Smith and Ivan Hearn, Lucan, are seen here
after the rough, tough game which saw Lucan de-
feat Zurich 10-4. Judging from the smiles, we'd
say the boys had as much fun as the spectators.
Peter Large, of the Centen-
nial Commission, was the spe-
cial guest speaker at the turkey
banquet preceeding the official
opening night ceremonies on
Friday, December 1, at the new-
ly renovated Zurich Commun-
ity Centre and A. C. "Babe"
Siebert Memorial Arena.
R, E. McKinley. MP for Hur-
on, introduced the guest who
was thanked by Zurich Reeve
Leroy Thiel.
Provincial treasurer Hon,
Charles S. MaeNaughton spoke
briefly at the dinner giving
praise to Zurich and area folks
who had the initiative and the
v therather
drive to see huge
project through,
Another speaker was Frank
Siebert, •a brother of the late
Babe Siebert for whom the
arena was named. Mr. Siebert
thanked the committee for the
fine tribute paid to The Flying
Dutchman, a former member of
the Montreal Canadiens hockey
club.
Introduction of head table
guests was made by Herb Turk-!

heim, acting in place of M. L.
"Tory" Gregg, who was unable
to attend.

ladies of the Centennial Com-
mittee who prepared the din-
ner, under the convenorship of
Mrs. Allan Gascho.
Prayers were offered by Rev.
J. W. Huether. Mrs. Beatrice
Hess presided at the piano.
A crowd of about 1,000 per-
sons attended the event in the
arena, while another 250 were
present for the banquet, which
was held earlier in the com-
munity centre.

Hon. Charles S. MacNaughton,
provincial treasurer, presented
a cheque for $10,000 to be ap-
plied to the building fund at
the official opening ceremonies
last Friday evening at the Zur-
ich Community Centre and A.

Figure Skaters
Ronnie Shaver, the young 15 -
year -old from Galt, stole the
early evening show at the open-
ing of the Zurich Community
Centre and the A. C. "Babe"
Siebert Memorial Arena last
Friday evening with his figure
skating program.
The youngster was appearing
in Zurich through the courtesy
of the Hamilton Figure Skating
Club, and thrilled the crowd
on hand with his dazzling spins
and twirls, smooth leaps and
jumps. Performing in two well-
planned solonumbers, Ronnie
used the entire ice surface and
many intricate manoeuvers to
draw the applause and standing
approval of the spectators.
Also appearing on the pro-
gram were Pauline and Troy-
ann Bell, of Hensall, who added
color and grace to the sparkling
program. The girls contributed
three solo numbers as well as
a delightful skating duet, in
costumes of stunning red velvet

tre and arena in. Zurich.
Even though Zurich lost by
a score of 10-4 to the rough,
tough Luean squad, a crowd of
appreciative hockey fans en-
joyed every hard fought mo-
ment of the gamo bringing back
fond memories from the past,
Liniment and heating pads may
have been necessary on Satur-
day, but during the match each
all-star player of the early and
mid-1950s was raring to go .. .
and go they did.
When the game began, Lucan
warned it would play under
hand for the contest, At about
the three-quarter mark of the
final period when it was evi-
dent that Lucan would win by
a comfortable margin, the Irish
management lifted the protest
and issued a challenge to the
Zurich Old -Timers for a return
game to be played in Lucan.
As the last whistle of the
game blew, there was no re-
sponse from the Zurich bench
-with the exception of a few
grunts and a groan as tired
bones made tor the dressing
rooms.
