Judging from the smiles, we'd say the boys had as much fun as the spectators. Peter Large, of the Centen- nial Commission, was the spe- cial guest speaker at the turkey banquet preceeding the official opening night ceremonies on Friday, December 1, at the new- ly renovated Zurich Commun- ity Centre and A. C. "Babe" Siebert Memorial Arena. R, E. McKinley. MP for Hur- on, introduced the guest who was thanked by Zurich Reeve Leroy Thiel. Provincial treasurer Hon, Charles S. MaeNaughton spoke briefly at the dinner giving praise to Zurich and area folks who had the initiative and the v therather drive to see huge project through, Another speaker was Frank Siebert, •a brother of the late Babe Siebert for whom the arena was named. Mr. Siebert thanked the committee for the fine tribute paid to The Flying Dutchman, a former member of the Montreal Canadiens hockey club. Introduction of head table guests was made by Herb Turk-! alKIMIZZIEME578--4 r heim, acting in place of M. L. "Tory" Gregg, who was unable to attend. Gordon Hess thanked the ladies of the Centennial Com- mittee who prepared the din- ner, under the convenorship of Mrs. Allan Gascho. Prayers were offered by Rev. J. W. Huether. Mrs. Beatrice Hess presided at the piano. A crowd of about 1,000 per- sons attended the event in the arena, while another 250 were present for the banquet, which was held earlier in the com- munity centre. CHEQUES PRESENTED Hon. Charles S. MacNaughton, provincial treasurer, presented a cheque for $10,000 to be ap- plied to the building fund at the official opening ceremonies last Friday evening at the Zur- ich Community Centre and A. E. McKinley, appearing in uniform following the old-timers' hoc- key game. Said McKinley, "This arena holds a special place in my memories." A large portrait of the Queen, to be hung in the building, was presented by Mr. McKinley, from him and his wife Audrey. Zurich Reeve Leroy Thiel and Peter Large, of the Cen- tennial C o to m i s s i o n, spoke briefly at the ceremony. The dedication prayer was offered b f r W. Huether Y Rev, J. The Zurich Centennial Band provid- ed the music. 0 Figure Skaters Ronnie Shaver, the young 15 - year -old from Galt, stole the early evening show at the open- ing of the Zurich Community Centre and the A. C. "Babe" Siebert Memorial Arena last Friday evening with his figure skating program. The youngster was appearing in Zurich through the courtesy of the Hamilton Figure Skating Club, and thrilled the crowd on hand with his dazzling spins and twirls, smooth leaps and jumps. Performing in two well- planned solonumbers, Ronnie used the entire ice surface and many intricate manoeuvers to draw the applause and standing approval of the spectators. Also appearing on the pro- gram were Pauline and Troy- ann Bell, of Hensall, who added color and grace to the sparkling program. The girls contributed three solo numbers as well as a delightful skating duet, in costumes of stunning red velvet Rec League Begins Play Tonite With Two Big , aces (By Shane McKinnon) The action will be hot tonight when the Zurich Rec League goes into full swing with the Hensall team taking on the Zurich Braves at 7 p.m., and the Dashwood Bears meeting the Zurich Kings at 9 p.m. The teams of the league have been practicing regularly and they are starting to show great interest in it. People cannot expect to see their team on the topof the unless they league have some enthusiastic support por t from the hockey fans—so come on out and support your team! When the game began, Lucan warned it would play under hand for the contest, At about the three-quarter mark of the final period when it was evi- dent that Lucan would win by a comfortable margin, the Irish management lifted the protest and issued a challenge to the Zurich Old -Timers for a return game to be played in Lucan. As the last whistle of the game blew, there was no re- sponse from the Zurich bench -with the exception of a few grunts and a groan as tired bones made tor the dressing rooms.
