He thought that Hay Township ha& been extremely fortunate in that only once council found it nec- essory to tender a second time for a contractor for a drainage works. Councillor Harold Campbell asked Mr. Wilder what should be done if only one bidder an- swers a call for tenders. "Do you accept it or not," Campbell insisted. Councillor Campbell offered evidence that wet weather had seriously hampered work on drains this year. He drew at- tention to some tile work being done on his own farm and pointed out that the contractor had quit work because the ground was too soggy to oper- ate his machinery. Campbell hinted that Mr. Wilder was perhaps fortunate that no tile work had been be- gun on his place this year. "My farm is all tut up," he said. Reeve Corbett told the meet- ing it was leis contention that a greater portion of the money paid to the contractor should be withheld until completion of the job. He explained that the engineer on the drain gave council instructions concerning when and how much of the total sum to pay the contractor. "If more money, was held back," reasoned Corbett, "the contractors would be less apt to leave an uncompleted drain to begin another." • Arena Named As Siebert Memorial Folks from Zurich and dis- trict who worked so hard and long toward the complete up- dating of the A. C. "Babe" Sie- bert Memorial Arena and Com- munity Centre have created a fitting and lasting tribute to the great man for whom the building was named. The Babe, known in hockey circles as The Flying Dutch- man, was far more than a roar- ing forward who played a nighty fine game every game for, first the Montreal Maroons, then the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins and fin- ally the Montreal Canadiens. In fact, Frank Calder, president of the National Hockey League at the time of Babe's death, described Albert Charles as "a good provider for his family, whose deep devotion to his wife and family is an example worth following by any mart". Zurich Institute Host Grandmother The geandmothers as guests and a display and explanations of antiques were the highlights of the November meeting of the Zurich Women's Institute. A skit, dedicated to grand- mothers, was a solo sung by Mrs. H. Finkbeiner, "Rocking Alone in an Old Rocking Chair". The chosen grandmother, Mrs. T. Meyers, happily rocked in her rocking chair throughout the singing. Mrs. T. Tetreau read the poem "Getting Old". The antiques displayed were an 1872 Huron Expositor news- paper, a wooden rolling pin, a gentleman's brooch, a wooden cane with a carved handle, a hat with large plums, a man's watch chain and a woman's necklace made from a maiden's hair, dishes, a candle lantern, a table cover. During business it was plan- ned to invite the two Zurich 4-H girls' clubs and their lead- ers to the December 13 meeting. Mrs. V. Dinnin and Mrs. W. Brokenshire were appointed to purchase an electric stove for the township hall upon coun- cil's approval. A motion carried to pay the pledge of $50 to the artificial ice fund. It was also voted to total the November offering to $15 for a Christmas cash don- ation to Huron County's Chil- dren's Aid. Toys and clothing will also be given. Mrs. W. Brokenshire, Mrs. M. Hay and Mrs T. Tetreau were the committee for the meeting. Best wishes on the OFFICIAL RE -OPENING of the "Babe" Siebert Memorial Arena and the Zurich Community Centre We were pleased to have been chosen as the plumb- ing contractor on this job. The new facilities will be a great asset to the entire community -- both young and old alike. O'EIRIIE PI'S PLUMBING AND HEATING Dial 2364914. It is said that before every game in the Montreal Forum, "Babe" would carry his invalid wife to her front -row seat, play his heart out for the team un- der her adoring, watchful eye and then gather her up in his arms at the end of the game and carry .her out of the arena again to the car,. The couple had two daughters, Jtidy and Joan. Babe drowned while swim- ming in Lake Huron at St, Jo- seph when he was 35 years old. "When Babe Siebert died the heart of a great comnpetitor was stilled forever," wrote Baz ie• O'Meara of the Montreal Star. In 1949 when the inital arena was built in Zurich, of- ficials saw it as an opportunity for the community to honor the Babe. Now, in new dress and boasting a fine new addition, the building once more renews fond memories of its namesake. of the "BABE" SIEBERT MEMORIAL ARENA and the ZURICH COMMUNITY CENTRE Takes Pace This Friday Night, December 1 It has been a pleasure to work on this project, and to help provide the much-needed facil- ities which are now available to citizens of this community.
