Alfred Duchartne, Correspondent On Saturday last in St. Charles Convent, St. Joseph Parish, a mass of thanksgiving was celebrated by Monsignor Bourdeau for Mr. and Mrs, Al- fred Ducharme on the occasion of their 64th year of married life. The Dueharmes have 11 children but not all could at- tend due to their occupation a n d responsibilities. Even though they were not present all were thoughtful with gifts and good wishes for the occa- sion. The senior Ducharmes are native born of this parish and we believe have the dis- tinction of being the oldest in the parish and as well for the present. the longest married couple. After the morning mass those in attendance re- turned to the Ducharme home where a delicious dinner was prepared and where the chil- dren spent the entire day. The weather was ideal with a warm sunshine and all to brighten the event. Gifts and good wishes were received by those present and also- surrounding! callers. The occasion was pleas- ing to the parents as well also to the children, So passed on another anniversary. Hays were passing near the station where I was standing, wondering which way to go. My stake was almost gone, only a few pieces of silver remained in my possession. I heard the two men speaking in French. and about going to the harbor where there was an agent hir- ing men to go in camp and the ship that was due to sail with her cargo of lumber jacks was to leave Collingwood in the early hours of the evening. I followed the two men in hear- ing the distance. This was a help for me to address myself to hire as a lumber jack. After both were through with the agent, I stepped forward as though I was an old Jack on the trail, The •agent looked at me once, then again another time, then he asked me if I had any experience in bush work and I told him yes. He then said I'll put you on. I was young and I looked more like a ,school boy than a Iumber jack. He gave me my pass card for entering the ship to take the men much further north where the Dwyer & Long Lumber Company of Chebogen had bought a large tract of timber and where they put up new set of camps. I thought then my worries were over. because I had only a few pieces of silver left and several miles away from home and already in late fall. When entering the camp I knew I would be under cover with plenty to eat. I was happy over it all, when all of the ex- pected men had arrived in late evening to board the ship to sail to our destination. The ship pulled out of harbor, al- ready the bay had swells. We had only been out for an hour when the captain came out with his orders to keep calm, he then ordered all of the furni- turne tied secure and told us to line on our backs if we would be sea -sick. The storm lasted all night and part of the next day. All were sick except Prew, Hay and a ship mate. (To be continued) 0 Visitors at the home Mrs, Jo- sephine Ducharme and son Isi- dore on Saturday last were from London, Mr, and Mrs. Claude Gelinas and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Masse. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Mernovidge of Royal Oak, Michigan, spent their Thanksgiving day in St. Joseph with the latter's mother, Mrs. Sarah Jeffrey, and other members of the family. They returned to their home on Fri- day last. Visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dolph Sopha on this highway were from Detroit, Mr. and Mrs. ,`dill Sopha, visiting for a few days. Also at the Sopha home were Mr. and Mrs, John Mahoney, of Mount Car- mel. On Thursday last •they all went to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dietrich's to spend a part of the clay. November in 1894 (Continued from last week) Another November days, as aforesaid, there were clouds overhead pushed by autumn winds and already snow cov- ered the ground, meaning that winter was approaching.
