British Firm Will Manufacture Car
Transport Carries at Centralia
Another British manufactur-
ing firm has deckled to locate
at Centralia Industrial Park,
Provincial Treasurer Charles
MacNaughtan announced last
week.
The A. H. Carter Engineering
Company of Tomworth, Staf-
fordshire, England, has leased
the base workshop at the park.
The firm manufactures car
transport carriers and has been
successfully established in this
field for .a number of years.
President of the company,
Alistair H. Carter, has visited
North America on a number of
occasions over the past two
years to survey the market and
to study the North American
requirements. He has obtained
an initial order for the Cana-
dian market, and eventually
hopes to produce his carriers
at Centralia for export to the
U.S.A.
The company is also develop-
ing a new type of electrically
powered automobile. It has al-
ready produced the prototype
which has aroused considerable
interest in both Britain and US.
Because of his experience, Mr.
Carter appeared in September
before the U.S. Senate sub -com-
mittee to give expert testimony
on the potential for electrically
powered vehicles.
The firm will continue its
research into the new type of
vehicle at Centralia, and plans
to develop other types of new
products.
The company hopes to take
over its new quarters at Cen-
tralia before the end of the
year. It will initially employ
up to ten persons, with an even -
Crop Report
Most Huron County farmers
have had a relatively good year
but with a great deal of dif-
ficulty. Douglas H. Miles, agri-
cultural representative, t o 1 d
members of Huron County coun-
cil at their session in Goderich
last week. Those in Usborne
and Stephen townships were
hit heavily with too much rain.
Mr. Miles estimated the white
bean crop as only 60 per cent
of normal which compares with
the yield in Michigan. Aver-
age crop is usually about 1,400
pounds to the acre, but this
has shrunk to about 1,000
pounds this year. However,
selling price is away above last
years.
Corn is a bright spot. "I
don't think Huron County has
enjoyed such a good corn crop
since I came here ten years
ago," Mr. Miles declared. "Grain
corn is above average."
He observed that it has
been above average, and oats,
barley and wheat about 15 per
cent off.
"Huron County has not been
hurt in the overall average of
crops, but the farmers have
had a tremendous amount of
difficulty," he said.
Mr. Miles reported on his
three months' trip to the Brit-
ish Isles with the international
exchange of junior farmers
when the members of the Ca-
nadian party lived in farm
homes and met farm people.
"We learned things that
money could not buy," he stat-
ed. "People are the same the
world over; they are concerned
about farm prices just as you
are." England spends 50 per
cent of its dollar on food; Can-
ada, 29 per cent.
"We in Huron County, Ontario
and Canada, have much to be
proud of," he declared.
Farm immigrants to whom he
talked were coming to Canada
because there were not so many
regulations, here, and he felt
that if Canada can keep away
from rules and regulations, it
would be better for us.

Nitrogen For Corn
Is Best When
Applied in. Spring
Studies over the past five
years in a number of locations
in western Ontario have shown
that fall applications of nitro-
gen for corn is inferior to spring
application, according to Ken
Stevenson, Wester n Ontario
Agricultural School, Ridgetown.
Yield differences of from six
to 42 bushels less corn per acre
were found when nitrogen was
applied in the fall as compared
to spring application. The
spring application was put on
as a pre -plant or after -plant as
a side dressing.
Fall application of nitrogen
in the form of ammonia was
thought to be the most efficient
way of supplying nitrogen to
the soil. During warm weather,
soil bacteria are not converting
ammonia to usable nitrogen. It
was believed that since the soil
bacteria are not converting the
ammonia during the winter,
none ,of the nitrogen would be
lost. However, apparently the
change from ammonia to ni-
trate (nitrogen in a form useful
to plants) does take place dur-
ing the winter months and some
of the nitrogen is lost.
Mr. Stevenson points out that
not all the advantages are in
spring application of nitreogen.
Wet seasons make spring appli-
cation difficult and often the
nitrogen is applied too late to
do the most good.
Research is continuing into
seeking a means of keeping the
nitrogen in the ammonia form
in the soil over winter. A
chemical is being tested this
year at W.O.A.S. which, if it
works, will prevent the conver-
sion from taking place.

Many Vegetables Can be Stored In
Basement For Winter Season Ahead
Storing vegetables in the
basement for the winter will
help the homeowner get the
most from the garden, suggest
horticulturists with the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food. The basement 'should
have a temperature range of
55 to 65 degeres F. and be fairly
dry to allow storage of pump-
kins, squash and tomatoes.
Store only those pumpkins
and squash that are fully ma-
ture. Cut them from the vines
leaving one to two inches of
stent attached. Pile them in a
warm location to allow them to
cure properly before they are
stored. Then, space them on
the shelves to allow free air

Linda Dangcil, who is Sister
Ann in "The Flying Nun", feels
at home in her part of the com-
edy series. Linda grew up in
parochial schools where the
nuns wore habits very similar
to those worn in the story of
life in the Convent San Tanco
in old San Jaun.
Miss Dangcil was born in San
Francisco where at the age of
3 she began her show business
career in a singing -dancing vau-
deville act with her brother
Mel.
The Dangcils moved to Holly-
wood when Linda was 10 and
she attended Precious Blood
School where her teachers, the
nuns, were of great help to her
in her work—teaching her their
Irish dances and songs, and
making it possible for her to
be absent from school when she
had an engagement in a motion
picture or on stage in one of
the Mexican -American theatres
around California where she
and her brother frequently en
tertained. Later she went on
to Immaculate Heart High
School and 'college where she
majored in theatre arts.

part of the basement. A word
of warning, handle them as
carefully as possible as cuts or
bruised skin can quickly lead
to rotting.
For dry beans or peas, choose
a dry, unheated area such as
an attic or outside porch. Pick
the pods as soon as they are
mature and dry thein in a warm,
shad^_d location. Shell and
store the seeds in a plastic bag
or f,iass jar.
A proper basement storage,
such as the one recommended
in Publication 268, Home Stor-
age of Vegetables, is needed
for correct storage of cabbage,
potatoes, beets, carrots, pars-
nips, rutabaga and onions. Both
cool temperatures and high
hum'dity are required to store
these crops successfully.
When 'handling potatoes, care
must be taken to see that they
are not left in the light for any
length of time; they will start to
turn green and acquire a bitter
taste. Potatoes stored at too
low temperatures may acquire
