Exhaust Systems
Create Hazards
Plan to do a lot of driving
this fall?
According to the Garage Op-
erators Association of Ontario,
one of the major items on your
car that you should -check is the
exhaust system.
Odorless carbon monoxide,
seeping into a car's interior
from a defective exhaust sys-
tem, can cause headache, un-
consciousness and even death
to an occupant when the gas is
in concentrations of just a few
hundredths of a per cent.
G.O.A. claims that a concen-
tration of 1000 parts per mil-
lion (.10 per cents) can cause
death after an hour and a half.
Isn't that a good reason to
make sure your muffler, ex-
haust and tailpipes are not cor-
roded and leaking?
Besides the safety factor, says
the association, there is an im-
portant economic reason for
having a healthy exhaust as-
sembly.
.G.O,A. explains -that gas pres-
sure builds up in all mufflers.
Excessive build-up of this pres-
sure tends -to push back into
the engine and act as a brake
against full driving power.
Back pressure, says the asso-
ciation, can reduce built-in per-
formance by as much as 45 hp
and actually .reduce 'miles -per -
gallon as much as 10 per cent.
Surveys show that one out
of every three cars an the road
requires exhaust system service.
Is yours one?

TV VIEWS
Parliament will be faced with
some facts from ACTRA, the
performers' and writers' union
for English-language broadcast-
ing,
Here are a few: CTV pro-
duces 31 hours of programs a
week in Canada, while import-
ing more than 60 hours a week
from the US. and Britain, The
CBC will receive $140 million
in government grants and less
than 4 per cent will be spent
on English-language writers and
performers. Canada spends
more than $20 million a year
on L.S, programs for Canadian
TV, and the U.S. spends noth-
ing here,
The list goes on. Does ACTRA
want more money spent on
more Canadian programs? Do
they want an increase in the
present 55 per cent Canadian -
content law?
The ratings show that people
want to be entertained all the
time, not educated, The next
item in this column will prove
this point.
Let's hope that parliament
will not pay boo much attention
to this matter, Television has
never been better. There is
still room for improvement, but
we must not force programs on
the people for the sake of say-
ing that they were written, pro-
duced and performed by Cana-
dians living in Canada,

'Movies took four of -the top
ten spots in the latest national
Nielsen rating which was taken
in August and just released.
Bonanza was first, with Thurs-
day Night and Saturday Night
Movies in second and third
positions. Number four was
Gomer Pyle, and Lawrence
Welk was fifth. Saturday Night
Movies and Tuesday Night mov-
ies placed sixth and seventh,
with Hogan's Heroes in eighth
spot. Andy Griffith and Family
Affair were tied for ninth.
