M. Geiger. has been wounded in the arm overseas. They do not know how serious the wound is. London Fair is the big at- traction this week, and many from the area are planning to attend the big event, During the past ten days Gook Bros., • of Hensall, have sold seven new 1918 models of the new Studebaker touring ears. John L. Rau has purchased the 1.30 -acre farm of David C. Dewar, of the Sauble Line. The consideration paid for the trans- action was $7000. Fred Bonthron, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bonthron, Hensall, has enlisted in the United States Army at Chicago. 40 Years Ago SEPTEMBER, 1927 George D e i c her t, Harvey Gelinas and Ed Snell have left on an excursion to the Canadian West, where .they will remain for some weeks before return- ing. An aeroplane was at Dash- wood on Saturday, and was kept quite busy taking up passengers for a ride. Misr Meda Surerus left for Toronto this week, where she will follow the teaching pro- fession. While Harry Angel and Ed- win Gascho were motoring to London one day last week, a stone flew up and hit Mr. Angel In the eye, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The two occupants were considerably shooken up but were able to return home. The Dashwood band present- er an open air concert at Grand Bend on Sunday afternoon, •and were much enjoyed by those attending. 25 Years Ago SEPTEMBER, 1942 Mr. and Mrs. Milton Mc- Adams, who have been living in the west end of the village of Zurich, have moved to the Volland farm west of the vil- lage, which they will operate for the coming year. Miss Norma Paisley has re- turned to her position as a teacher on the staff of the Ziir- ich Public School, after spend- ing the summer at Grand Bend. Herb Mousseau has purchased the fine 100 -acre farm of Charles Clifton, on Highway 4, about two and a half miles north of Kippen. Also visiting at the Keys' home were two other brothers, Mer- vyn and Allan. 15 Years Ago SEPTEMBER, 1952 The village of Hensall have notified residents in both Hay and Stanley townships that af- ter October 1 their fire brigade will not answer any calls into either municipality, since they have been unable to reach an agreement over retainer fees. Grant Case, manager of the local co-op, is busy preparing for the erection of a new home on the westerly part of the property of Herb Mousseau. With this Series there is a choice of four engines. Standard engine is the all-new 327 cu, in. Astro -Flash V8 delivering 210 hp. As well, there are three optional engines: a 327 cu. in. 4 -bbl. V8 which turns out 275 hp, a 396 cu. in. V8, turning out 325 hp and a 427 cu. in. V8 delivering 385 hp. addressed a rally in the Zurich Arena. Over 300 attended the event. Dr. J. B. Cockburn, a grad- uate of Queen's University, of Kingston, has taken overthe medical practice in Zurich previously owned by Dr. T. D. Keast, who has left the village of Zurich for Sarnia. Mr. and Mrs. John Geoffrey, of the 14th concession, on Sat- urday celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. A high mass was celebrated in their honor at St. Peter's Church, by Rt. Rev. W. Bourdeau, and 'at night a reception was held in the Zurich Community Centre. 10 Years Ago SEPTEMBER, 1957 Gordon Smith, of the Blue - water Highway, accompanied Ed Little, of Hensall, to the east coast recently, where they delivered a new trailer coach. Mr. and Mrs. Grant Male are busy this week moving their household effects from Zurich to Hanover, where the former has been transferred by the Bank of Montreal. Zurich Kings had little trou- ble getting by Courtright in the first round of the OBA playoffs, and will now meet Walsingham in the next round. William Elliott, son •of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Elliott, Stan- ley Township, won first prize in public speaking for Huron and Bruce counties. Mrs. Leonard Noakes, of Hen- sall, who underwent a major operation in Victoria Hospital, London, is progressing nicely. Many from the area attended the Hartman-Regier wedding re- ception on Saturday night in the Zurich Community Centre. On Tuesday night thieves in - Singer Wayne Newton will headline •the first two days of the Western Fair evening grand- stand show, September 8 and 9. The following three days will have tenor Dennis Day and comedian Henny Youngman. Master of ceremonies for the first five days variety program will be former Londoner Gordie Tapp, with two shows nightly at 7 p.m. and 9 pan. The Friday and Saturday show,•in adition to Newton and Tapp, will have accordionist Lou Prohut from the Don Mc- Neil Breakfast Club and his family and the Hal Sands Man- hattan Rockets dancers. The Monday, September 11, to Wednesday, September 13, show, along with Dennis Day, Henny Youngman and Tapp will have Gerard Soules Dogs, the Amandis and the Manhattan Rockets. The final three days will fea- ture the Hubert Castle Inter- national three-ring circus both afternoon and evening. Eve- ning shows will be at 7 p.rn. and 9 p.m.., and afternoon shows on Thursday, September 14, and Friday, September 15, will be at 3 p.m. and on Saturday, September 16, at 2 p.ni. On Friday afternoon, Septem- ber 8, there will be a special show at 4:30 p.m. featuring Wayne Newton and the Chief - tones, Canada's all -Indian dance band. S a t u r d a y, September 9, is vaded the premises of O'Brien's Produce, in Zurich, and drilled the safe. The Warriors' Day parade is scheduled to ar- rive at the grandstand at 1:00 p.m. This will be followed by a demonstration by the Third RCR centennial team, and at 2 p.m. an afternoon variety pro- gram will feature Gordie Tapp, the OPP motorcycle precision ride and Lou Prohut. Monday, September 11, is ladies' day and a special after- noon program is planned. This year's edition of Fashion Var- ieties will feature Dennis Day and Miss Dominion of Canada at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, and Wednesday, September 13, will have a variety show starting at 3 p.m. This show will be head- lined by Gordie Tapp and the OPP motorcycle precision ride. This year is Western Fair's 100th anniversary and to help celebrate the event special fea- ture attractions are planned. There will be a special centen- nial event, a steam threshing demonstration and entertain- ment throughout the grounds. Francarro and Estreleta, who were married hanging from a helicopter at last year's fair will return to do separate aerial acts. There will be roving singers, bands, chimps that will entertain and amaze you, and a diver who will dive 45 feet from the top of the grandstand into a sponge. Crop Report The harvesting of white beans has started in some areas of the county, and the complete crop will be mature within seven to ten days. A touch of frost was reported in some of the low lying areas and may have effect on the crop. Spring grains have pretty well all been harvesed in Hur- on with the farmers now gath- ering the remaining straw, A substantial acreage of fall wheat has been planted in the county. The 1967 corn crop looks like it will yield high if it can escape any early frost. To date, it seems to be behind in maturity nearly two weeks.
