Jury Recommends
Use of Preservers
The jury in Goderich inquir-
ing into the deaths of two con-
struction workers at Bayfield
July 18 has recommended that
there be a stricter enforcement
of regulations on wearing life
jackets and a research projeet
to develop a convenient life
jacket for men working near
water in hot weather.
The two men, Vernon Oesch,
43, RR 2, Zurich, and Michael
Maloney, 19, Hayfield, drowned
in the waters surrounding the
new pier being built at the fake
Huron resort. Witnesses said
that Oesch struck his head on
a steel bar as he fell into the
water. Maloney jumped to his
assistance and both men had
disappeared under the water
when another worker arrived
with a life preserver•.
Testimony showed neither of
the drowning victims was wear-
ing a life jacket, although the
company had provided them
with the safety precautions.
