Her death came suddenly on Sunday, August 6, at her home in Toronto. She had lived for many years with her sisters, Margaret and Dr. Jennie Rob- ertson. Emmaline was (born on the Smillie farm north of Hensall in 1883, the daughter of Jane and Ben Smillie. She attended Seaforth Collegiate following which she taught school in Hay Township and in Salem. In 1909 she entered University of Toronto, graduating in 1913 with a BA. Following this she attended the College of Edu- cation. In 1914 she and her brother Ben went to India as mission- airies from the Presbyterian Church in Hensall. In India Emmaline taught the high school, After the outbreak of World War I, she joined a hos- pital ship as nurse and saw service in the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. She spent ifINSMINELIMEaMallinSVERZEs.r.. seven years in Indian and the service. On returning to Can- ada she obtained her 'MA at Queen's University specializing in history. Following a year's teaching in Brantford, she joined the teaching staff at Parkdale Col- legiate and remained there un- til she retired a number of years ago. She was head of the history department at Park - dale. Emmaline was, until recent years, active in St. Andrew's United Church in Toronto. She was a member of the Univers- ity Women's Club and a regu- lar attendant at its meetings. She took a serious interest in politics and the government of Canada. The fact that Sir Wil- fred Laurier, as a small 'child, lived one year with the Smillie family while they resided in Quebec, may account for this interest. She is survived by her sisters Margaret and Jennie and a brother, Dr. Alex in Niagara Falls, .. a a. L9 A'GI:: VA::'O`n,• .1, r,M tawa Monday of this week.
