(Citizens News Photo) _ OF YEARS GONE _BY_ 50 Years Ago JULY, 1917 Engineer Wilson, of the Hy- dro -Electric Power Commission, was in the village on Wednes- day and was making full ar- rangements for the supply of hydro power to Zurich. The first baseball game of the season was played on 'Mon- day night between the Zurich nine and the team from Clin- ton. Zurich came out on the top end by a score of 9-6. Ferd Howald doing the pitching. A small -sized cloud burst vis- ited the area on Tuesday after- noon, and left in its wake a considerable amount of damage. Several barns were burned to the ground, and a valuable horse belonging to Henry Claus - ins was killed by the severe lightning. Many people are being taken for five dollars these days as Goshen Line in Stanley Town -- a large number of Mexican five dollar bills .are in circulation throughout Ontario. They look just like Canadian or American bilis, but are worth only 13 cents in this country, so per- sons stand to loose quite heavy in accepting them. 40 Years Ago JULY, 1927 M. C. Milliken, late principal of the Zurich Public -School, has been promoted to area man- ager of a well-known life insur- ance company, and will be tak- ing up residence in Goderich very shortly. Gordon Manson, son of Stan- ley reeve J. A. Manson, is at. present attending a summer course in Hamilton. In the fall he will assume his new duties as assistant principal of the Dundas Public School. The new Ruston oil engine, which the William brothers have purchased for their grist mill in Zurich, has arrived and is being installed by a Brus- seI's man. 25 Years Ago JULY, 1942 Thomas Harry Hoffman, of Dashwood, and Ella Maud Bol- ton, of Hensall, were united in marriage at Carmel Presbyter- ian Church, Hensall, 'by Rev. W. Weir. Charles Hay, of London, who has joined the army police force, is at present spending a few days holidays with his fam- ily in Zurich. Kenneth Breakey has left Zurich for Montreal, where he has secured a position with the Canadian Marconi Company. The fiftieth wedding anni- versary of Mr. and Mrs. John Elder, of Hensall was celebrated at their former farm in Hay Township. Twenty-seven mem- bers of the family attended the event. The summer home of Mr. and Mrs. George Hess, in the Pinery south of Grand Bend, was the scene of a reunion when former residents of Biggar, Saskat- chewan, now residing in On- tario, gather for an enjoyable outing. 15 Years Ago JULY, 1952 Four Zurich area students were among the award winners at the South Huron District High School during the past term. They are Carol Thiel, Kathryn Klopp, Raymond Cor- riveau and Kathryn Kalbfleisch, A lovely evening was spent on Friday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Rau, when ratepayers from SSS 1, Stanley, gathered to honor Mrs. Rau on the completion of 15 years teaching in the same school. Lorne and Lloyd Klapp, of Zurich, accompanied by Gordon Smith of the Bluewater High way, left on Monday for a mo tor trip to the western prov- inces. They are planning to at- tend the annual Calgary Stam- pede. Ross Johnston, along with the hardware firm of Rader & Mittelholtz, have donated a large scoreboard to the Zurich ball team, and it has been set up on the grounds for the fans to keep track of the scores. The Bank of Montreal has opened a sub -agency office in Grand Bend, and this office will be open every Tuesday and Thursday until the end of Sep- tember. 10 Years Ago JULY, 1957 The new fire truck, recently purchased by the trustees of the police village of Zurich, has now arrived, and is quite •a modern invention compared to the old out -dated machine. The Zurich Kings won their ninth ball game .of the season and star pitcher Arnie Meyer registered his third shutout as they defeated the Hensall cline FAMILY AFFAIR—Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sang- ster and son Bradley won top honors at the parade in Hensall on Saturday, for the best horse-drawn vehicle. Gerald Gingerich and staff are rushing these days prepar- ing their new premises, across from the post office, for the big official opening. Douglas Theander, of Lon- don, and Wayne Rowe, of Peter- boro, have been added to the staff of the Zurich baseball team. Both young men are be- ing employed for 'the summer at the Kalbfleisch planing mills. Father D. A. Monaghan, par- ish priest at St. Boniface for the past six and a half years, was honored at a gathering in the Town Hall prior to his de- parture for Merlin, On Sunday the Zurich fire department was called to the farm of Charles Bedard, north of Drysdale, when lightning struck his large barn and com- pletely destroyed it. VARNA NEWS A Centennial service o1 the Varna and Goshen congrega- tions will be held in Goshen United Church on Sunday, July 23, at 11 a.m. Dress optional. A combined choir will lead the singing and a 15 -minute sing- song of old hymns. Rev. M, Morrison will be in charge of the service. Replies are still pouring in from former pupils of SS No. 6 who are planning to come to the reunion on July 29. Floyd 111eAsh, of Hamilton, spent the week -end at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs, J. T. McAsh. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Robin- son, Lorrie and Cathy, of Agin- court, spent the week -end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred McClymont. A large number of relatives and friends attended the recep- tion in the Zurich Community Centre last Saturday evening for Mr. and Mrs. Nick Whyte, of Seaforth, Orange Walk Members of LOL 1035, v:th their families and friends cote- brated the "Glorious Twelfth" at Bayfield last Wednesday. The float that the lodge 'n- tered in the parade took first prize. It was a decorated wagon drawn by an Eagle tractor made in 1927, and owned and driven by Norman Smith.
