MARIE HESS, Executors for the estate of the late Julius Thiel ALVIN WALPER, Auctioneer Interesting Facts Do As I Say Golf, the popular game of millions, has an early history of interfering with duty. Dur- ing the 15th century in Scot- land, parliament issued three decrees urging the "golfe" to be abolished in favor of arch- ery, then essential In defending the nation. These efforts to supress the game were unsuc- cessful, however, for the Scots continued to swat the ball, even James IV whose parliament had passed the third decree. 0 Cold Caper Among the variations of the Scotch Reel, traditional folk dance of Scotland, is the Reel of Tulloch — a routine which originated because of human misery. According to legend, the belated minister of a Tul- loch country church usually found his waiting congregation cavorting to keep warm. Their behavior led to the development of the dance which made this village famous, On the Line Kite -flying, a papular univer- sal sport in windy weather, has served though the ages not only SUPERTEST PETROLEUM LTD. Council of the Township of Stanley as a pleasurable pastime for small fry, but also as helpful activity for grown folks, Oc- casionally used for military sig- naling in wartime, this prede- cessor to aviation has also been employed in carrying rescue lines to distressed 'ships. It has pioneered in the fields of a e r i a l photography and weather observation. 0 Unusual Hobby One of the earliest stamp col- lectors on record was a young British lady who had no inten- tion of displaying her accumu- lation in an album. Advertis- ing in the London Times in 1841, she requested canceled postage stamps to complete a whimsical project. The 16,000 stamps she had already received from personal friends, she said, would be inadequate to paper her dressing room. Good From Evil After suffering neglect as a young child fallowing his moth- er's death, Friedrich Froebel, a German educator, made certain that lonely children of future generations would be spared a similar fate. In 1837 at Biau- kenbourg, Germany, he started the first kindergarten. This early educational experiment. combining creative play with pleasant surroundings, paved the way for today's pre-school teaching methods.
