ST. JOSEPH and DRYSDALE
Alfred Ducharrne,
Mr. and Mrs, Fred Ducharme,
spent some time in Detroit and
Windsor, returned to their
home on Sunday last. They
were taken back by their son
Biaise and grandson Anthony.
Also in their company were
Sister Pricille Therese, of Chat-
ham, and Sister M. St. Denis,
who recently underwent surg-
ery. She will remain for some
time to recuperate from her
operation. She will be at St.
Charles Convent and also visit-
ing with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. F. Dueharme.
There has been plenty of
broken weather of late which
has caused a delay to the farm-
ers for their grain seeding and
a few more days of the same
could mean no seeding for al-
ready it is getting late. It hap-
pens once in years, date or no
seeding weather, and perhaps
this is one of them.
There is not any reason for
causing too much worry to the
farmers as yet, if my recollec-
tion is right during the years
of the first war there were two
wet years which went against
the farmers. The first year
was a nice spring, seeding went
in good shape and the growth
was good, all was favorable to
the • farmers until near harvest-
ing time when rain started and
continued for several. days till
the ground was saturated and
farmers could not get to cut-
ting their grain due to softness.
Some had put all the horse-
power they had on their bind -
had to cut their crops. Others
ers, reapers or whatever they
took to their cradle, that too
was not a success. Much of
their crop was lost by sprouting
or rotting.
The next year farmers started
their seeding the first week of
June. That, too, was almost a
complete loss because it was
too late to grow. It was not
encouraging for the farmers,
some were on the way to bank-
ruptcy. That year farmers took
a chance of putting in a larger
acreage of white beans. The
weather then became favorable
—they had a good crop, good
sample, and the price ranging
from five to eight dollars a
bushel. It meant prosperity to
many farmers.
There was not much stall
feeding those years so the
farmers when taking their
beans to market would bring
back the necessary feed grain
which had been shipped from
the west. So this year could
well be a replica of those long -
gone years with rich bean re-
turns.
