ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS
THURSDAY, MARCH 34:I, 1967
TOO LITTLE TOO LATE — That was the
.tory of this picture taken at Wingham on Monday
night when the Zurich Flyers trounced Gorrie 10-6.
Here we see the Gorrie goaler reach for an illusive
puck which is nestled in the net as neatly as any
goal. Bob Johnston (indicated by the arrow)
scored the point, assisted by No. 10 Earl Wagner
and Bob Merner (lower right corner) . In the back-
ground is Jim Pfaff, another of the boys wearing
the big "Z" for the Intermediate D semi-finals.
MIGHTY POPULAR TRIO—Zurich
born and Zurich bred, these three fel-
lows hare been giving the local hoc-
key fans a thrill with their speed and
accuracy on ice. Currently shaking
things up in the WOAA Intermediate
D semi-finals are (left to right) Bob
Johnston, Earl Wagner and Bob
Merner who, with their team mates,
whipped Gorrie 10-6 in Monday eve-
ning's game in Wingham. This trio
provided the scoring punch for that
game, piling up a total of 17 points
between them.. If the team is suc-
cessful in this series with Gorrie, the
local boys will move on to meet St.
Clements in the finals.

The Zurich Flyers won the
first game of their best -of -three
semi-finals with Gorrie on Mon-
day night, by a score of 10-6.
The game was played in Wing -
ham. Second game in the
series was played last night,
(Wednesday), in the Exeter
Arena, and if a third game is
necessary it will be played next
Monday night in the Wingham
Arena.
Winner of this series will ad-
vance into the finals for the
WOAA Intermediate D cham-
pionship, and will meet St.
Clements. Zurich eliminated
Monkton to earn •a spot in the
semi-finals, while Gorrie elimi-
nated Elvia to earn the right
to represent the northern part
of western Ontario.

By Jerry Rader, League
President
Last week our secretary,
Kevin . McKinnon, received a
notice from the Recreation
Committee stating the new mo-
tion that had been passed at
their last meeting. The con-
tents of the letter made it clear
that all participants in both
basketball leagues must wear
running shoes or any other kind
of footwear . which has soft
soles. Since most of the play-
ers have to have them for
school it would not be too much
of a bother if they were to bring
them home on Friday nights.
If it would not be too much
trouble the referees ask that
everyone be prompt for their
games, preferably 15 minutes
before game :time. There has
yet to be a game which started
at the proper time of one
o'clock, therefore putting all
other games behind schedule.
- During the past 'couple of
weeks there has been a lack of
participation in the girls' league
and if the girls themselves don't
do something about it, some
drastic changes will have to
take place. It is not fair for
the ones who want to play to
suffer for the doings of only a
few. If you did not intend to
play regularly, why did you
sign up. -.
The games that were to be
played on Easter Sunday will
be dropped and played at the
termination of the schedule.

and three assists, Other goal -
getters for the Flyers were stal-
wart defenceman Dick Bedard
with two, George Suplat one,
Kevin McKinnon one and Fred
Wells !one.
Zurich lost little time in jump-
ing into an early lead, when
Wagner clicked on a neat pass-
ing play with line -mates John-
ston and Merner at the two-
minute
wominute matk. Three minutes
later Gorrie came back with a
counter off the stick of Ron
Livermore, f or mer Hensall-
Zurich Combine star. Before
the period ended, however, the
Flyers pumped in three more
goals, while holding Gorrie to a
single marker.
The Flyers started out at a
terrific pace in the first stanza,
but slowed down considerable
towards the 20 -minute mark.

Quick goals by Johnston and
1VIcKinnon in the second period
shot Zurich into a 6-2, but their
margin was short-lived as Gorrie
roared back with two goals to
come within striking distance.
Gorrie opened the scoring at
the one -minute mark in the
third period to throw a real
scare into the Zurich crew. At
this point the Flyers began to•
find the range and pumped in
four goals in less than 10 min-
utes. Earl Wagner flipped in
two, with Dick Bedard picking
up his second goal and Fred
Wells 'accounted for the final
goal, With less than three min-
utes left to play Gorrie scored
their final marker, but it came
too late to stir them up enough
to fight back into contention.
Only six penalties were called
in the game, with four of them
going to Zurich and the other
two to Gorrie.
Two of the Zurich regulars,
Barry Bloch and Ken Westlake,
were missing from the line-up
on Monday night. Bloch is on
a course at Toronto and West-
lake was on a school tour to
