entailing the use of 13 -to -15 -
digit numbers will be ready to
roll. This extensive number
sequence will begin with a yet -
an operator.
According to Bi11 Haysom,
Goderich, area manager of Bell
T e l e p h o n e, groundwork for
werld-wide direct dialing is be-
ing laid Each conuntry has
to -be determined world access
already been assigned a num- code number which will connect
ber under a global plan ap-
proved by the International
Telecommunications Union in
Geneva. The large geograph-
ical zones have been designated
the Canadian caller with our
o w n international exchange.
This will be followed by dialing
the number of the country to
be called, then the single trunk
as follows: North America is 1; i number within that country,
Africa is 2; Europe, 3 and 4; followed' by the number of the
South America, 5; the South party to be contacted.
For example, he said that
Canada House in London could
be called by dialing as follows:
Canada's World Access Code,
then 44 for the United King-
dom, then the specific trunk
number for London, and the
seven -digit number of Canada
House.
USSR,

North Pacific, 8, and Asia 9.
"At present", Mr. Haysom
said, "a limited version of trans-
oceanic dialing is being con-
ducted between New York and
London and it seems to be
working very well". He point-
ed out that one of the present
problems in the way of com-
plete world dialing is the lack
of dialstandardization. He ex-
plained that in Britain, each
number consists of three letters
and four digits, that dials in
Denmark don't include the let-
ter "W", that Russian telephone
exchanges use the Slavic alph-
abet, and that dials on New
Zealand have the numbers in
Mr. Haysom said that Direct
World Dialing is an extension
of Direct Distance Dialing which
is in effect in this area and
throughout most parts of North
America. He cautioned, how-
ever, that although world dial-
ing will be just a matter of
dialing 13 to 15 consecutive
digits, long distance charges
will still be in effect.

Presentation of the Academy
Awards on television annually
provides a target for enormous
public interest — and specula-
tion, and the history of the
"Oscar" presentations provides
a veritable gold mine of catchy
questions. Dull you say? Just
take a whack at it. How many
performers have been named
best actor or best actress twice
in a row? I couldn't remem-
ber, so I obtaned a list of the
awards from 1965 to 1928. Here
are a few of the highlights:
Ingrid Bergman was named
best actress in 1944 for "Gas-
light" and again in 1956 for
"Anastasia":
Olivia de Havilland won the
award in 1946 for "To Each
His Own", and again in 1949
for "The Heiress".
In 1935 Bette Davis. was se-
lected for her role in "Danger-
ous", and in 1938 for "Jezebel".
Luise Rainer picked up the
best actor award in 1938 for
"The Great Ziegfeld", and the
following year for "The Good
Earth".
Spencer Tracy is the only
actor to win the best actor
award two years in a row. He
did it in 1937 for "Captains
Courageous", and in 1938 for
"Boys Town".
In the history ,of the Oscars
there was only one tie, and was
for "best actor" in 1932, Fred-
erich March and Wallace Beery
received the awards for "Dr.
Jekyl and Mr. Hyde" and "The
Champ".
The 39th Academy Awards
'presentation will be held on
April 10 at 10 p.m. on ABC-TV,
with Bob Hope as the master
of ceremonies. Who else?

Add Turnkey to
Huron County Jail
Huron County jail at Goder-
ich is to have an additional
turnkey. On recommendation
of the property committee,
county council last Monday de-
cided to advertise for one.
Carl Dalton, Seaforth, chair-
man, reported that the commit-
tee had made a tour of the jail
and had discussed matters with
the governor, R. W. Bell.
The committee authorized that
in future the guard on duty
would only be required to punch
the clock at station 5 at nine
o'clock and three o'clock dur-
ing the night hours. This par-
ticular clock is located in the
basement and it was the feel-
ing of the committee .that two
calls per night shift would be
satisfactory.
Governor Bel] reported to
county doun.cil Monday that 260
prisoners had been admitted
during 1966, of whom 125 or
nearly half were there on
charges connected with liquor.
Theft and breaking and enter-
