Boy's Basketball Action in Zurich
By Kevin McKinnon.
On Sunday the boys found
out that they must play the
game correctly or be kicked
out of the game because they
had five fouls called against
them. The boys' games were
well refereed by two former
high school stars, Don O'Brien
and Gerald Shantz. Don and
Gerald called everything with
the result being quite a few
were knocked out of the game
because of fouls. This should
teach all of us that we must
play by the rules in order to
play out best.
In the first game the Do-
minions were victorious over
the Beavers by a score of 41-25.
Gord Beierling was high man
for the winners as he paced
them with 16 points, followed
by Randy Decker with seven.
Paul Flaxbarci and Ron Core-
veau with six each and Richard
Schilhe collecting the other five
points.
Richard Fischer led the last
place Beavers with 10 points,
with David Siebert and Shane
McKinnon hooping five each,
and Jerry Rader getting three
and Richard Turkheim two.
Richard Turkheim was hurt in
the second quarter and had to
leave the game with a badly
pulled tendon in his ankle, with
the result that it left the Beav-
ers short-handed when one of
their players was called out on
five fouls. We all hope that
injtuy to Richard isn't too
serious and that he will be
back playing in a short while.
In the next game the Acad-
ians handed the Confederations
their first defeat of the season,
by a score of 50-29. Kevin Mc-
Kinnon reached the 30 -point
level for the second time this
season as he scored an even 30
points to lead his team to vic-
tory. John Gaseho was next j
as he looped 15 points with Ed
Prang getting three and Gary
Hugill one.
Ken Clarke was the leader
for the losers as he accumu-
lated 20 points in a losing cause,
with Clare Lawrence getting
the other nine points.

GUARD THAT FORWARD — Girls may be
young laches most of the time, but when their leis-
ure time is spent at the Zurich Arena on the
basketball court they become fleet forwards and
gushing guards who stop at nothing to sink a
basket for their side. Here we see members of
two girls' basketball teams in action this week.
The sport has caught on here just recently and
because basketball is such a terrific spectator sport,
folks may enjoy watching the girls race back and
forth over the floor in. hot pursuit of a bouncing
bail. Get in touch with any of the local youngsters
for information concerning the time of games.
Zurich Intermediate Flyers Eliminate
Winthrop to Advance Into Next Round
By Kevin McKinnon
On Thursday night of last
week the Zurich Intermediate
Flyers defeated the Winthrop
Warriors by a score of 9-6 to
win their series in four straight
games. The exciting game was
played before an exuberant
home crowd, and this gave the
Flyers quite a lift, which they
surely needed because they
trailed 2-1 after the first stanza
and 5-4 after the second.
The game was another clean-
ly played affair as .only four
penalties were called with each
team receiving two. The bad
guys for Zurich were Jim and
Dick Bedard, while D. Moylen
and F. Malone served time in
the cooler for the losers.
Bob Merner was the star for
Zurich as he led the attack
with three big goals, followed
by Bob Johnston with two and
singles going to Kevin McKin-
non, Fred Wells, Jim Pfaff and
George Suplat. McKinnon also
assisted on all five of his line -
mates goals as he was playing
his first playoff game for the
Intermediates. He was . filling
in for Earl Wagner who had to
travel to Paint Edward with
the Exeter Junior Hawks to
play an important playoff game
which they won 7-5.
To get back to our own game,
as I said before, it was very
close throughout most of the
game, but as has been the case
in all other games the Flyers
really caught fire in the third
period and this is what carried
them to victory.
With the third period only two
minutes gone, George Suplat
finally got the ball rolling for
Zurieh as he made an ice -long
rush and capped it off by scor-

didn't give up as they fought
back and scored to make it 6-5
in their favor, only to see Zur-
ich score two goals off the
sticks of Bob Merner and Kevin
McKinnon. This gave Zurich
the led, 7-6, and from here they
never looked back.
Percy Bedard was outstand-
ing between the pipes for the
Flyers, especially in the first
two periods when he kept the
team in the game es the home-
sters just seemed not to be able
to get rolling.
The Flyers do not know who
the next opponents will be, but
whoever it will be, it should
provide the public with lots of
thrills. Because of the mild
weather I presume I would be
safe in saying that all their
home games from now on will
likely be played in the Hensall
arena due to the lack of ice
here in Zurich.
