Married 50 Years Ago
"An interesting event took
place on Wednesday, February
28, at Corbett, when Miss Violet,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.
Gaiser, of Shipka, was united in
marriage to Mr. William Decker,
son of Mr. and Mrs. John Deck-
er, Sr., of this village. The
bride was supported by her
sister Alice, while Mr. Harry
Hess supported the groom. Only
the near relatives of the bride
and groom were present at the
ceremony. We join in extend-
ing best wishes."
This item appeared in the
Zurich Herald, dated March 2,
1917, and Mr. and Mrs. William
Decker have truly lived `happily
ever after'. Last Tuesday, 50
years after their wedding day,
the couple celebrated their
golden wedding anniversary
with a dinner at the Dominion
Hotel in Zurich.
Guests included their son
Carl, his wife Ruth and ,the
couple's six children, Wayne,
Brian, Randy, Timmy, Susan
and Jennifer; Mrs. Loretta
Weido, and Mrs. George Hess.
Unable to attend were Mr. and
Mrs. Lloyd Gaiser and Mr. and
Mrs.. Ferd Haberer.
Weatherwise, Mr. and Mrs.
Decker's wedding day in 1917
was much nicer than the snowy,
cold day on which their 50th
wedding anniversary fell. The
couple' recalls that the roads
were bare, making sleighing al-
most impossible without taking
to the ditches.
Mr. and Mrs. Decker farmed
on the- homestead now operated
by their only son, Carl. They
retired to Zurich 13 years ago
but Mr. Decker admits if he
were younger, he would go back
to the farm.
It was from his father that
Mr. Decker inherited his love
of horses. He was only 12 years
old when he showed his first
horses and since that time, Mr.
Decker became well-known for
his wagon horses, Hackneys and
Clydesdales. He has been ac-
tive as a judge of horses for
the past 15 years.
