This group of students are shown as they eagerly await their turn to board the bus, driven by Lloyd Guenther, so they may be on their way to the first classes in Exeter. VARNA NEWS UNITED CHURCH WOMEN The UCW met in the church for their September meeting last Thursday evening. The president, Mrs. M. Hayter, opened the meeting with pray- er. Group two was in charge of devotions, psalm eight was read in unison. Mrs. Grant Webster read the Scripture, Mrs. Harvey Hayter gave the meditation and prayer, The offering was taken up by Mrs. Melvin Webster and dedicated by Mrs. Roy Elliott. A piano solo was played by Miss Dar- lene Hayter. The guest speaker, Mrs. Williams-Eatwell, of Bedford, England, who has been visiting her niece, Mrs. A, J. Mustard, gave a very interesting talk on "Life in England," and her im- pressions of Canada. She found the Canadian people very kind and friendly. Mrs. Mervyn Hayter thanked the speaker. The roll call was answered with a favorite quilt pattern. Forty-two calls were made to sick and shut-ins dur- ing the summer. Reports were given regard- ing the church supper which will take place the first week of October, also the operating of a booth at the plowing match. The meeting was closed with prayer by the president, and group four served lunch. * * * Layman's Sunday was ob- served in the United Church last Sunday. A layman's choir assisted with the service. Mr. Don Barker, of King City, gave the address, entitled "Commit- ment and Implications". Floyd McAsh, of Hamilton, visited over the week -end at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. McAsh. Mr. and Mrs. Erich Milas and son Peter, of Kitcher, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Miles, of Hamburg, Germany, visited recently with Mr. and Mrs. Julian Mantey, near Zur- ich. Mrs. Adam Milas is a sis- ter to Julian Mantey. The two had not seen each other for 48 years, Mr. .and Mrs. Adam Miles have been visiting in On- tario since spring. They intend to return to Germany some time in September. Mrs. H. Murray, of London, and Mr, and Mrs. Alvin Wil- helm, of Baden, attended the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Desjardine, last week. Recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Steinbach were Mrs. Morley Witmer, Mrs. Dorothy Arendas, Mrs. Ed Boll- man, Mrs. Ted Kesman, all of Detroit, and Miss Elsie Shoe- smith, of Halifax, England. Mrs. Alex Meidinger is a pa- tient in St. Joseph's Hospital, London, where she is under- going surgery. Miss Doreen Howden, of Lon- don, were visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred McCly- mont.
