Farm Safety Week
is Commended By
Ontario Minister
As part of the effort to re-
duce :farm accidents, the ob-
servance of Farm Safety Week,
sponsored by the Farm Safety
Council of Ontario, July 24-30,
was commended by the Hon
William A. Stewart, Minister of
Agriculture and Food, this
week.
"As •a result of the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food's farm accident survey in
1959-60, and the partial surveys
undertaken by 10 counties dur-
ing the past three years, it is
evident that there are far too
many accidents on the farm to-
day", Mr. Stewart pointed out.
"Therefore, county and district
farm safety councils have been
organized to work in co-opera-
tionwith the Farm Safety
Council of Ontario and the De-
partment of Agriculture and
Food. Their work is reflected
:in the reduction of the num-
ber of accidents and human as
well as financial losses. How-
ever, this reduction is still not
sufficient and we must all en-
deavor to increase our efforts
Toward making the farm a safer
place to live."
Accident prevention must be-
come an integral part of farm
management since the costs in-
volved in accidents have a con-
siderable bearing on the health
and well-being of the farm fam-
ily, as well as on income by the
savings in property loss.
The Farm Safety Council of
Ontario is joined by the Na-
tional Safety League of Canada
and the National Safety Coun-
cil of the United States in en-
dorsing Farm Safety Week, in
an effort to focus attention on
the need for accident preven-
tion throughout the season.

Judy LaMarsh, I love you!
Regular readers of this column
will remember my prediction
about eolarcasting in Septem-
ber My forecast was the week
of September 11. Our wonder-
ful state secretary, Judy, an-
nounced a few days ago that
daytime colorcasting will start
in Canada on September 1,
She said it had been decided
to change the originally -an-
nounced date of October 1 to
coincide better with the start
of fall program schedules. This
makes good sense and the gov-
ernment moved in the right di-
rection.
Manufacturers and the broad-
casting industry were hoping
for a September start, They
have it—and I was only 10 days
out.

Plans for a fourth nationwide
television network in the Unit-
ed States were announced by
millionaire industrialist Daniel
H. Overmyer. It will be called
the Overmyer N e t w o r k, or
"ON", and will begin broadcast-
ing with about 100 stations in
September of 1967. This is the
first new TV network since
ABC began operations n 1948.
They plan eight hours of
programming a day, including
two hours of news and a two-
hour entertainment show broad-
cast from Las Vegas, plus "live"
and taped entertainment, sports
and public service shows.

Early -morning television will
come to Western Ontario view-
ers this fall with the announce-
ment that CTV will produce a
one-hour program starting at
7:30, with the title "Bright and
Early". One earlier show,
called "University of the Air",
will start Monday through Fri-
day off at 7 a.m.
Spare Ribs Taste
Delicious if They
Are Barbecued
The man of the house will
appreciate this recipe for bar-
becued spareribs (and so will
you). The ribs are pre-cooked,
so they can be barbecued in a
few minutes over glowing coals,
The result is moist, tender,
well -cooked meat, which is flav-
ored just right.
Barbecued Spareribs
4 pounds pork spareribs
1 medium-sized onion, sliced
11/2 teaspoons salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
barbecue sauce (see recipe
below)
Cut spareribs into serving
size pieces, Place then in a
large saucepan or pressure
cooker, Add the sliced onion,
salt and pepper. If using a
pressure cooker, add half cup
water. Cook at 15 pounds pres-
sure for 15 minutes. Cool,
then drain.
If using a saucepan, add
enough water to just cover the
ribs. Bring to a boil; reduce
heat and simmer, covered, for
11/2 hours or until very tender.
Drain..
Meanwhile, prepare the bar-
becue sauce recipe given below.
When ready, place the ribs
on outdoor grill, 5 or 6 inches
