You Are Welcome
DEAR DORIS — Our daugh-
ter, 171 thinks she is in love
with a 21 -year-old school rop-
out. She wants to quit school
and help him go back to school.
Unfortunately he has not the
mental capacity nor the ambi-
tion for further education and
has told others he would go
back only until we had given
them a wedding.
Neither of them has any sense
of money responsibility. He is
an unskilled laborer and is al-
ways broke. He is not retarded
but he is slow. She met hint at
high school and her maternal
instincts took over.
Our girl is bright, sociable
and capable with people. We
feel she would be taking on an
older child rather than a hus-
band, who may not be able to
give her the necessities of life.
Upset
DEAR UPSET_ — Oh, no.
Maybe she feels maternal, but
this can wear pretty thin. Has
she thought what it would be
like to live with such a one day
after day and year after year? A
husband is a partner, not a
house pet.
They have little in common.
I'm sending you a leaflet on the
subject of love in the hope that
she will read it and do some
heavy thinking.
DEAR DORIS — I'm going
out with a boy by the name of
Jack and he is very nice. But!
He has a big nose and this hurts
his feelings. Really it is not so
big but he says that people are
always laughing at him. But it is
not true. Really be is very cute
and also very nice.
Even the other night we were
watching T.V. and Jimmy Du-
rante was on. Jack said, "He has
the same problem as I -do".
I want to help him, to tell him
that I love him even though he
has a big nose. One night he
even cried, he thought I didn't
love him because of his nose.
Beside that, to my knowledge
there is nothing wrong with his
nose!
1 Love Him
DEAR I.L.H. — Lots of noses
are large — and the people be-
hind them well liked.
As Jack grows up he'll find
that the •only real handicap
would be in letting his appear-
ance worry him. You think he's
nice; also cute. So will others, if
he develops his nice personality.
But save the declaration of
love for that mature woman you
are going to be some day.
Confidential to Wedding M.C.
— You take over .after the cake
has been cut and served. You
welcome guests, read telegrams
and other messages, guide the
progam of toasts. You fill in
the awkward pauses with anee-
dotes of your own and in gener-
al keep things rolling. If you
want an impronitu speech from
a garrulous and entertaining
gttest you may invite it. Or any
other bright idea. But know
enough to call a halt before the
folks get restless!
DEAR DORIS — I would like
very much to become a regis-
tered nurse but because I have
taken the wrong course and my
marks aren't especially high,
I've decided to become an R.N.
assisant.
Everyone says that I should
be an RN., because the nurse's
assistants get the dirty work of
the hospital, and the patients
don't have any respect for you.
My guidance counsellor •doesn't
know very much about it.
Do you think it would be wise
to change to the arts course
from the four year business and
commerce? I know I'll never be
a secretary or bookeeper be-
cause that type of work bores
me terribly.
In Midstream
DEAR IN MIDSTREAM — I'd
change. If you like nursing, be a
nurse! You can make it. Once
you get into the practical bed-
side nursing you'll find that all
the struggle was worth it.
There's nothing wrong with
being a nursing assistant, but
when you have the chance to
take a full nursing course, don't
settle for less.
I'm sending you my leaflet,
"Would You Like to Be a
Nurse?", which tells you what
this warm, human profession is
like. (This leaflet is available to
other readers for ten cents and
a stamped, self-addressed envel-
ope.)
