HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1966-06-23, Page 3THURSDAY, JUPIE 23, 1966 qteetaetee World Tour Charles Mickle, a teacher •at West dale Secondary School, Hamilton, will leave on June 29 with 20 other teachers from the Hamilton district on a two - months' tour that will take him to Japan, Hong Kong, China, Malayasia, Cambodia, Thailand, India, Kashmir, Iran, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Of special interest will be a visit to 2nain- land. China and to its cities of Canton, Shanghai and Peiking. Visits in Peiking will be made to historical places of interest as well as an agricultural com- mune. Most of the travel will be done by jet aircraft. Guest Speaker At St. Paul's Anglican Church Sunday morning, the Rev. Brian L. Landon, from England, fa- ther of Rev. J. P. Gandon, as- sisted at the service of holy communion and also gave an inspiring Father's Day message. The choir, under direction of Mrs. Frank Forrest, sang an anthem. Special parts were taken by Kathie Henderson, Brenda Lavender, Cathy Rob- erts, Clark Forrest. Editor Annual Reunion Over 80 attended the Love - Forrest reunion held under ideal weather conditions at Riverside Park, Exeter, on Sat- urday, with a full line of en- joyable sports directed by Ken Hodgins, of Centralia. Attend- ing from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Love, Cairo, Mich,, and Mr. and Mrs, Robert Love and family, London, Hap- py birthday was song for Mrs. Lorne Luker celebrating a birth- day that day. Robert Love, Thedford, was elected presi- dent, and Ken Hodgins, Cen- tralia, secretary. Personals Mr. and Mrs. Don Rigby, of Blenheim; Mr. and Mrs. Terry North and Teresa Anne, of St. Thomas, and Mr. and Mrs. Stew- art McQueen spent the week- end with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Snell, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Passmore and Michael, of London, were week -end visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bell and Mrs. Pearl Passmore. Mrs. Richard Taylor, Jr., of Chiselhurst, is a patient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter, Derwood Windover, who re- sides in the Fink apartments over Irwin's, is resting comfort- ably in his home following a Kippen Women's Institute Hear Guest Speaker at June Meeting The regular June meeting of Kippen East Women's Institute was held in the Legion Hall, Hensall, Thursday, June 16. The meeting opened with the Opening Ode and the Mary Stewart Collect, followed with the Institute grace and dessert and tea. The tables were beau- tifully decorated in the Insti- tute colors. Mrs. William Cald- well and Mrs, Cecil Pullman poured tea. Mrs. John McGregor conduct- ed a contest that tested mem- bers observation of advertise- ments. Roll call was answered by "Why I like farming". Mrs. James Drummnd read the minutes which were ap- proved as read. Invitation to Elimville on August 10 was ac- cepted on motion of. Mrs. Ross Broadfoot, seconded by Mrs. Robert Bell. Treasurer Mrs, Vern Alder - dice gave her report showing a balance of $830.83. Mrs. Al- derdice gave her report of the district annual held in Dash- wood, May 19, and outlined plans for the plowing match. Mrs. Robert Simpson, who is Involved with the Historical So- ciety, told of a tour July 6 of Historical interest, costing $1.50. The motto, taken by Mrs. William Bell, "He who thinks by the inch, talks by the yard, should be kicked by the foot", had many helpful thoughts. A fashion show was present- ed with Mrs. Harry Caldwell doing the commentary, The models were Mrs. Douglas Mc- Gregor, Mrs. Vern Alderdice, Mrs. Kenneth McKay, Mrs. June Cooper, Mrs. Glenn Bell, Mrs. Ross Sararas and Mrs. Robert Bell. Mrs. James Drummond intro- duced the guest speaker, Miss Carol Lane, from Shell Oil. "Canadians are the world's greatest travellers," said Miss Lane, in an address entitled "Discover Canada by Car". "The new Trans -Canada High- way and a growing centennial spirit are helping to bring Ca- nadians closer together," the speaker said. "A car trip to the Maritimes is no longer con- sidered impractical for people west of Ontario, and the mag- nificent Rockies and Pacific coast are now being seen by many visitors from Eastern Canada." Miss Lane's presentation con- cluded with a demonstration of her unique suitcase packing system. using "luggage leaves" to help keep articles wrinkle- free and easy to find, The speaker was thanked by Mrs. Grant MacLean. Mrs. Ernest Whitehouse gave court- esy remarks. The meeting closed with singing God Save the Queen. Members of Kippen East WI and guests, numbering 41, en- joyed a bus trip to Detroit on Miscellaneous Shower Held For Joanne Link Miss Joanne Link, Hensall, bride -elect of early July, whose marriage to John Ralph Cooper, of Kippen, will take place at the Centralia Faith Tabernacle, Centralia, on Saturday, July 2, at 2 p.m., was honored at •a miscellaneous shower held at Hensall Legion Hall Friday eve- ning. The event was attended by relatives and friends, and he hall was lovely with pink and white streamers, balloons, nowballs and peonies. Dr. B. A. Campbell, Toronto, formerly of Hensall and Zurich, who will celebrate his 97th birthday July 1, together with 50 Masons from Toronto, as well as some from Hensall and Zurich, expect to tour South Huron Hospital, Exeter, and Blue Water Rest Home, Zurich, on June 25. One hundred and eighty stu- dents from grades 8, 7 and 8 of Hensall and Zurich Public schools, with their principals and teachers, enjoyed a won- derful day at Niagara Falls on Tuesday, where they took a tour of Fort George, Queenston Heights, Welland Canal, Wax Museum and other places. Mrs. Archie Noakes is •a pa- tient in St. Joseph's Hospital, London. Mrs. Herb Janes was admitted as a patient to St. Joseph's Hospital, London, Thursday af- ternoon with a fractured hip, a result of a fall in her home. Mrs. Jones was taken by West- lake •ambulance, Zurich. t mher Rdhekahs Annual Meeting Regular meeting of Amber Rebekah Lodge was held on Wednesday evening with noble grand Mrs. George Clifton in charge, when the charter was draped in memory .of Past Grand Master R. E. Sharpe, of Grand Lodge. Plans were made for the an- nual picnic of Amber Rebekah and Oddfellows lodges, together with their families, to be held in July, Plans were also made to entertain Goderich lodge at the first meeting on September 7, which will be past grands' night. FARC' EUIP t{`ENT ONE MILE EAST OF BRUCEFIELD Brucefield --- Ontario Obituary MRS, WILLIAM HYDE Mrs. William Hyde passed away in Westwood, New Jersey, on Wednesday, June 15, in her 90th year. The former Annie Eliza Troyer, she was born and raised in Hay Township and lived ail her married life on the London Road, south of Hen- sall, going to reside with her daughter, Mrs, Edward Barrett, at Westwood, New Jersey, some three years ago. Surviving are two daughters, PAGE THREE Mrs. Barrett (Eleanor), West- wood, New Jersey; Loretta, of London; two grand -daughters, three great-grandchildren. Mr. Hyde passed away in January, 1962. The late Mrs, Hyde rested at the Bonthron funeral chapel where public service was held on Friday .at 2 p,rn,, conducted by Rev. Harold F. Currie. In- terment was in Hensall Union Cemetery.
