Church Women Mrs. Harold Currie opened the general meeting of the UCW with a poem on steward- ship, followed by prayer. Mrs. Walter Spencer had charge of the devotional theme when hymn 374 was sung and the Scripture incorporated in a very fine paper on "Life Is •a Gift", followed by a story and prayer. Mrs. Currie gave a modern day parable on "Tips and Tithes", after which Mrs. Grant MacLean and Mrs. Kenneth Mc- Lean, hostesses for the evening, took up the offering. Miss Suzanne Rannie favored with two beautiful solos, ac- companied at the piano by Mrs. J. Goddard. Mrs. Grant Mac- Lean contributed a humorous reading. Mrs. E. Rowe intro- duced the guest speaker, Mrs. W. G. Tiffin, of Wingham, who is a wife, mother of four, a teacher at high school and Sunday school, besides being a devoted worker in the UCW. .Mrs. Tiffin spoke on "The Un- comfortable Pew", and closed her address with an original poem. Mrs. Ron Mock gave courtesy remarks. The roll call showed 46 members present. Miss Mary Goodwin presented the treasurer's report. Mrs. Harvey Keys reported for the community friendship commit- tee. Mrs. Vern Alderdice, of the social functions commit- tee, reported the purchase of bowls and spoons and asked that seals on the top of instant Maxwell House coffee be turned in by May 31. Mrs. E. Ohip- chase reported on supply and a .bale is to be packed the first week in .Tune. Mrs. Tiffin said that resis- tance to Christianity is becom- ing greater and pagan religions are becoming stronger. Mrs. Elder asked how members can be enticed to attend meetings. It was brought out that very few women in the 20 to 30 age group ever attend a UCW meet- ing, although they are commit- ted church members. Mrs. Currie closed with prayer. The topic will revolve around capital punishment and related issues. 0 Obituary THEODORE (TED) WALPER Theodore (Ted) Walper, of Exeter, passed away in •Huron - view on Thursday, April 21, in his 73rd year. Son of the late William and Oarolyn Walper, he was born in Zurich and in his younger years farmed north of Exeter and later was em- ployed with the RCAF at Cen- tralia. Music was his life's work, starting with the date Ed Tre- ble, •of Exeter, he then formed bands of his own and was band- master for many years. He was unmarried, He was a mem- ber of the IOOF Lodge 67, Exeter, since 1915. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. James Sparkley, Romeo, Mioh.; a niece, Mrs. Frank Parsons, Hensall, and two nephews, William Walper, Detroit, Mich., and Hugh, Windsor. Funeral service was held •on Saturday from Hooper -Hockey funeral home, Exeter, •conduct- ed by Rev. J. C. Boyne. Inter- ment was in Exeter cemetery. Bearers were Leslie Gibson, Dave Miller, Maurice Quance, Pat Skinner. The delegate was selected by a public speaking contest, held in Clinton Secondary School. J. P. Gandon, reviewed a fur- ther chapter of the study book, "Let God Go Free", dealing with the different denomi' nations. Mrs. Annie Heid, who attend- ed the annual WA meeting in London on April 19, gave an account of her visit. The smorgasbord held on April 16 proved very successful, and the ladies were congratu- lated on their hard work.
