CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1966 Work on Lake Huron Pipeline Despite the winter weather, work has not slowed down too badly on the Lake Huron pipeline to London, as this picture taken at Port Blake will indicate. The huge reservoir and filtering plant are progressing well an schedule, and preliminary work is under way on the actual pipeline itself. Chamber Head Lauds Government On Economy "The Ontario Chamber of Commerce is pleased to note the government's official read- ing on the healthy state of our provincial economy. The min- ister announced last week that the gross provincial product increased 9 per cent last year, and he looks forward with the business community to a fur- ther substantial increase in the coming year," said L. D. Dou- gan, president of the Ontario organization. "The budget proposes a very large increase in provincial ex- penditures but if such increases are necessary, we the public must be expected to pay for them. The Chamber is pleased to see the emphasis placed on education which represents a sound investment in the future l of the province," he added. _OF_ "YEARS GONE - BY - 50 Years Ago FEBRUARY, 1916 Arrangements are underway to have a fine new organ in- stalled in the Evangelical Church in this village. John England has sold his 50 -acre farm on the Babylon line, Hay, to Albert Brown, of Stephen, for $1,500. Mrs. D. Moltke and son Gor- don, of Rosthern, Saskatche- wan, are visiting at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Brown for a few days. Miss Annie Armstrong, of the Goshen Line, Stanley, has accepted a position with Mrs. Freeman of MacTavish's store, Seaforth. 40 Years Ago FEBRUARY, 1926 Mr. William Decker, who lives east of the village, has placed an order with Messrs. S. Dietz & Son, building contrac- tors, for a new addition to his barn to be used as a straw shed. The building, which will have all steel sides, is 36x44 feet in size and will make a fine appearing structure. Mr. W. H. Phile, of Hensall, was a Sunday visitor at his home here. Mrs. Schaff, of London, is visiting at the home of the Misses Eva and Ethel Williams. Mr. Gordon Surerus was a visitor with friends down east this past week. Miss Hilda Neuschwanger spent the week -end at her hofne on the Blind Line. 25 Years Ago FEBRUARY, 1941 Mr. Jacob Deichert, of the Blind Line, was taken to Clin- ton hospital and operated on for appendicitis. Mr, Clarence Schade, of the Blue Water Highway south, sold his 90 -acres farm to' Mr. Walper, of near Grand Bend and has purchased the 118 - acre farm on the .14th conces- sion, from the estate of his late uncle, William T. Truemner. This farm Mr. Schade pur- chased is the old Truemner homestead, and the farm where his mother, Mrs. William Schade, was raised. Miss Beatrice Manson spent the past week with Mr. Donald Manson at Dundas. Members of Mr. E. M. Dagg's Sunday school class made a sur- prise visit to the home of Mr. -and Mrs. Dagg and presented a gift in remembrance of their class associations during the past five years. Hensall Kinsmen Arrange Ball The Hensall Kinsmen Club held their dinner meeting last Thursday evening and had as their guests, deputy governor Paul Van Londersele, and Keith Dol, of Delhi, with Gov. Lon- dersele presenting a report on. their Kinsmen project. • Other guests included Pat Bellinger, Jack Rutherford, Ken Candler, Ed Taylor, Walt Finnie Stratford, who brought up the Raiders Trophy and pre- sented it to the Hensall Club. Hensall, in turn, will present it to some other club. Also a guest, was Jim Clark, a former member, who is leaving for Palmerston, Plans for the annual Sham- rock Ball at Hensall Commun- ity Centre, on March 25, were made. The meeting approved dona- tions to the following: Sick Children's Hospital, Toronto; Canadian Mental Health and March of Dimes. 15 Years Ago FEBRUARY, 1951 Mr. and Mrs. Herb Desjardine are at London where the form- er is taking treatment at Vic- toria Hospital. We are pleased to report he is progressing fav- orably. Mrs, Jack O'Brien and son Michael have returned to Hali- fax after spending sometime with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lentils O'Brien. The form- er's husband is stationed with the Canadian Navy in Halifax. Mrs. William Hay, who has been a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital, London, has returned to the home of her daughter in that city. Mr, and Mrs. Rudy Oesch and Mr. and Mrs. Amos Gascho and others of the Blake vicinity at- tended a funeral near Shake- speare recently. 10 Years Ago FEBRUARY, 1956 Gilbert Dow, Exeter, and Emmerson Erb, Zurich, were elected directors of the Huron Whole Milk Association at its annual meeting in Clinton. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Erb were surprised when one of their Holstein cows presented them with a third set of twin calves in three years. Miss Ella Link, of Exeter, was a week -end guest with Mr. and Mrs. Ward Fritz.
