CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1965 Television Views by William Whiting We have gazed into a ball made of crystal and will pass along our verdicts pertaining to TV programs now on the screen. You'll note that several have been left out—the chief reason being that we haven't had the time and enough TV sets to watch all programs at once. The following is a list of pro- grams that debuted this fall and, in our opinion, will not be with us next season: I Dream of Jeannie, Trials of O'Brien, Loner, F.B.I., Wackiest Ship, Shenandoah, Steve Lawrence, My Mother the Car, Convoy, Gidget, Green Acres, Big Val- ley, Laredo, Long Hot Summer, Camp Runamuck and Honey West. The next list of programs debuted this fall and in our opinion will return for a sec- ond year: Get Smart, Please Don't Eat the Daisies, Amos Burk Secret Agent, Run For Your Life, F Troop, I Spy, Ho- gan's Heroes, Smothers Broth- ers. The last list of programs have been on television for a few seasons and in our opinion will not return next season: Flipper, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, My Favorite Mar- tian, 12 O'clock High, Dr. Kil- dare, McHale's Navy, Petticoat Junction, and The Virginian. These are not my personal likes and dislikes. It's merely the way we believe the ratings will go. And now for a few brief notes from observations we've made. Hollywood Palace, Red Skelton, Dean Martin, Per- ry Mason and Bonanza will be with us next season. And this is where we step out on a small limb and predict that the Ed Sullivan Show will collapse. What a limb! Someone will saw that one off for sur& Value of television stations appearing at fall fairs is ques- tionable. Total n u m b e r of viewers reached, compared to a station's total coverage area, is very small indeed. It works out to less than one per cent in most cases. Let's take a look at the past and what some area TV outlets have done at fall fairs. Channel 10, London, conducts closed circuit programs each year at Western Fair in Lon- don. Three years ago, Kitchen- er's Channel 13 took their mo- bile unit to London's fair. Last year marked the first time London's CFPL-TV showed up at Kitchener's small fair. They made another appearance this year, but as their promo- tion manager, Tom Daley, said "this will be the last". That same year Channel 10 appeared at several smaller fairs, including Aylmer and Stratford. Kitchener's station participated in the Aylmer fair's parade the same year, using Big Al as the attraction. Big Al was also in the Strat- ford parade and has been ever since. London didn't show up in Stratford this year and if our memory is correct, they weren't there last year either. This year Hamiltons Channel 11 had beautiful girls wander- ing around Kitchener's fair handing out schedules, which included the Buffalo stations, London, Kitchener and, of course, their own. What a pro- motion that was for everybody, but really a waste of time and money! So, why doesn't everybody stay home? In fact, the dis- play of TV stations at fairs is a complete waste of time and money and appearing at Kit- chener's farce (not fair) is a real waste. P.S. to Kitchener's Fair Board: Go down to Lon- don, boys, Pian Farm course At Crediton Hall Arrangements have been Made to hold a course in farm management dealing with the principles of decision making on the farm as it effects farm profits.
