All lumps should be finely- pulverized, and t h e fertilizer distributed uniformly. Cara should be taken to avoid leaving unfertilized strips or to nverkip areas already covered. At the time of application, grass should be dry to avoid burning but it should be well watered immediately after to ensure that the material gets to the roots, This month is also an excel- lent time for spraying lawns to control weeds. Fall spraying has an added advantage as most cultivated garden plants in the borders are then more mature and less sensitive to sprays than they are in the spring. And 2-4-D is still one of the most effective herbicides for broad-leaved plants such as dan- delion and plantain. The trunks of trees and any exposed roots of trees and shrubs should never be sprayed with these compounds. For hest results spray only on days when the temperature ranges between 70 and 80 degrees., The rate of killing depends largely on the temperature dur- ing and following the spraying and this is usually most rapid when weeds are in a succulent growing condition. Do not use 2-4-D or silvex an bent grass lawns. A safer material is mecoprop, For the hard -to -kill weeds such as black medick and common chickweed, use silvex or mecoprop. All the above chemicals should be applied only at rates that are suggested on the container label and all the safety precau- tions recommended by the man- ufacturer should he followed carefully.
