She answer: letters of general interest.in this column but can't undertake personal replies. DEAR DORIS — Shortly aft- er we met, my 'husband inform- ed me that his former girl friend was expecting his child. They did not wish to marry due to a religious difference. My husband was pushed into signing a handwritten paper to t h e effect that "h e was the said father and would pay the debts so incurred during this pregnancy." We both expected hospital and doctor bills. But she has gone to a home for the past four months and we've been informed by her mother that we must pay $50 a week for. this. Doris , this is nearly $1,000, not counting delivery. Can my husband be made to pay this bill? We can ill afford it since I am expecting myself. Alarmed DEAR ALARMED — The amount sounds unreasonable. Your husband does have some obligations •to contribute to ex- penses, but this should be spelled out for him. Either a tiawyer or the child care agency could assist in pinning this down. DEAR DORIS — I have a friend in her late fifties whose husband died last March. While she is comfartable finan- cially she would like to take some sort of job to fill in some of the awful loneliness she is experiencing. She has sugessted working in a dress shop, but I feel this isn't a very fulfilling job, and unless she does something a little more absorbing, she will really only be filling in her time until death. She has no family at all, And no training at all. Concerned. DEAR CONCERNED — Sell- ing dresses could be exciting — for the right person. Or scrub- bing floors. What seems bor- ing to you may be filfillment for another. If your friend is healthy and ambisious, there's something she can do and enjoy. If she wants training she can go right ahead and get it. Medical sci ence has given us 20 extra ac- tive years to use as we will. Have her discuss things with a local social or educational counsellor. DEAR DORIS — My husband asked me to write you. We've been happily married for 14 years. Our problem is smoking. I have never smoked so I don't know his problem. He quit when we were married. When I was in the hospital he started again. He quit again for three years. Now he has started again. He says he doesn't want to smoke, but his job isn't th e best. He doesn't know what to do. He was looking so good and feeling good before he started again. I'm sick thinking about it. Please Help DEAR PLEASE — He does what thousands do: reaches for a fag when he is worried or tense. The idea being to re- lease tension. The theory might be o.k. if it weren't for the fact that cig- aret smoking produces its own reason for worry — serious worry. Threats to health which are only too real. SMOOTHEST • EASIEST RUNNING STRAW CHOPPER MADE TODAY! It's Purr•r-r•rfectly smooth ... but a tiger for work. STARLITE / DRIVE-IN THEATRE Area Barbers Increase Prices Haircut prices in Huron Coun- ty are up 25 cents after the Huron County branch of the Ontario Barbers' Association voted the increase at a meeting a week ago. Children's haircuts were raised from 75 cents to $1 and adults' from $1 to $L25. The increase was not released immediately, said an OBA spokesman, because the barbers •did not want an influx of cus- tomers the week before the change. The vote for the price -rais- ing was a majority, with the barbers in one town rejecting the move. I"Everything else is going up in price, and we have to keep pace." explained the barber spokesman when asked the rea- son for the raise. The last time haircut prices were raised in Huron County was by 25 cents in 1962, 'he said, BEIMININIIIMAWININWININNIWORWINWWWINIBWIIIWA DUWARD MMcADAMS RADIO — TELEVISION • Sales and Service • DAY AND NIGHT CALLS Dial Zurich Days — 2364094 Nights — 236.4186 "Always ready to serve you" Feature Attractions JULY 15, 16 and 17 (Double Feature) "The Outlaws Is Coming" (Colour) Three Stooges "Face of a Fugitive"- Fred ugitive"Fred McMurray, Lin McCarthy * * is JULY 19, 20 and 2.1 "The Long Ships" (Colour) Richard Widmark, Sidney Poitier TWO SHOWS NIGHTLY First Show at Dusk Children Under 12 in Cars Free PLEASE NOTE: All Double Features will be shown only once, each night.
