Canadian social worker Doris Clark invites you to writs
her about your problem. She answers letters of general
interest.in this column but can't undertake persona! replies.
DEAR DORIS—My husband
and I have asked another mar-
ried couple to help us•celebrate
our first wedding anniversary,
It's dinner at a restaurant, then
dancing afterwards.
1 feel sure that my friend
knows it will be "Dutch treat".
However, I wonder if I've done
wrong in expecting them, to
spend a slightly expensive eve-
ning with us, by invitation. It's
simply a matter of finances,
Doris; we are not in a position
to treat, but did want to spend
that evening in a special way,
with another couple.
Should we have just planned
to go out by ourselves? Is this
expecting too much from
friends? How about us treating
to beverages?
Is It a Boo -Boo?
DEAR IS IT—Are your friends
close pals of yours? Have they
the money to put such an eve-
ning easily within reach?
If so, it's no boo-boo. Just
clarify things with a phone call
ahead of time to say you want
to take care of the drinks.
Happy Anniversary!
DEAR DORIS — My fiance
and I quit smoking eight months
ago. Joe said the other night
that he might start smoking
again some day. (Neither of us
had any problem kicking the
habit.)
I told him I hoped he never
starts again, most of all because
when I am not smoking the
taste of nicotine nauseates me.
I told him I would not kiss him
if he started the dirty habit
again. He thought this a great
poke and laughed heartily. If
Joe ever starts smoking again,
would I be fair in sticking to
my promise? Also, I fear I will
start again if he does.
Non -Smoker
P.S.-We have been going to-
gether two years and this is my
biggest problem. Isn't that mar-
velous?
DEAR N.S.—Wouldn't keep-
ing such a promise mean break-
ing another more important
one? You've promised to marry
him. Can you imagine a life-
time with your dreamboat, but
no kisses?
More promising would be to
link up with a national Non -
Smokers' .Association. That way
you get moral support and prac-
tical facts about why and how
to quit the habit.
It's foolish for a quitter to go
back on the hook after invest-
ing• weeks in getting unhooked!
I'm sending you an address to
write to.
DEAR DORIS — I have been
steady for about three
months. For the last three
weeks he hasn't even phoned
me. I don't think there is any

reason why he should be angry
with me.
If he doesn't want to go
steady any more I think that he
should tell me and I'd give him
back his ring. Should I phone
him, and if I did what would 1'n
say? I'm very quiet and a bit
shy, but I like him very much.
If there is a chip off the stone
of the ring, should I do any-
thing about it?
What's the Matter
DEAR WHAT'S—He may be
just as wordless as you about
breaking off,
Write a brief note offering to
return the ring — setting him
free if he wants to be, If the
ring has been chipped, well —
that's the way the cookie crum-
bles! Forget it.
DEAR DORIS -- Someone
who comes to my house reeks
of foul perspiration so much
that if I feel the odor is cling-
ing to me if I sit in the same
chair hours afterwards.
If it is a problem of chemis-
try, what can be done? I would
try to get the information across
in some tactful way, or even
anonymously, which I know is
unspeakable, but perhaps better
than making a lifelong enemy.
Nearly Gassed
DEAR NEARLY GASSED --
Prespiration does not smell
when it is fresh. Frequent bath-
ing and clean clothing are the
answer.
Some bright sparks can take a
hint. I'd try the gift box ap-
proach first; an unbirthday pres-
ent or saop, talc and deodorant.
Friendship is risked either way!

on the publicity support given
by the press—and your assis-

Employment Up
General employment -condi
tions in the Goderieh area and
in most of Huron County con-
tinued to show marked improve-
ment during the month of
April, according to C. M. Jutras,
manager of the Ooderieh N.E.S.
At the end of April, i9$5,
389 persons were registered for
employment with the Goderich.
office of the National Employ-
ment
mployment service compared to 571
at the end of the previous
month. Major improvements
resulted from increased produc-.
tion in xnany local and area
firms which created an increase
in recalls and new hirings.
Despite adverse weather con-
ditions, navigation on the Great
Lakes and some construction
projects got underway. Wit;i
the advent of the warmer weath•
er and the return of the tourist
trade, all indications are for an
even stronger labor demand
during the month of May.
