Five white bean varieties are tible to anthracnose.
recommended for planting in
southern Ontario this year, says
Dr. G. H. Clark, of Canada, De-
partment of Agriculture's Re-
search Station at Harrow.
The varieties are Seaway,
Sanilac, Saginaw, Michelite 62,
and Michelite.
Seaway is the earliest -matur-
ing bean variety recommended
for Ontario, maturing three to
10 days earlier than Sanilac and
10 to 18 days before Michelite.
The variety has produced good
yields in Huron County and,
when planted late, in the more
southerly areas. A bush bean
variety, it is resistant to com-
mon bean mosaic but is suscep-
cer Fund. Mrs. Beaver was
presented with a corsage.
The Oddfellows and Rebekahs
are invited to attend a district
church service in Wesley Willis
United Church, Clinton, Sun-
day morning, May 2, at 11 a.m.
A short memorial service will
be held for members of the
lodges who have been called to
higher service.

tertainment for the evening.

Sanilac is recommended for
early planting in the more
northerly sections of the bean
growing area, and for medium
or late planting in the southern
sections. A bush variety, San-
ilac matures about a week be-
fore Michelite, and is resistant
to both common bean mosaic
and anthracnose.
Saginaw, a vine variety that
is resistant to both mosaic and
anthracnose, is about three days
later than Sanilac in maturing.
It equalled Sanilac in yield dur-
ing tests in Huron County but
produced two bushels an acre
more in Kent County. Licensed
for sale in Canada in 1963, Sagi-
naw is expected to be grown
fairly extensively this year by
producers who prefer a vine
bean variety. It should he
planted early and it is recom.
mended for all areas except the
northernmost portion of the
bean growing district of south-
western Ontario.
Michelite 62, a vine variety,
is about four days earlier in
maturing than Michelite, from
which it was selected. Although
the two are similar in most re-
spects, Michelite 62 also fea-
tures resistance to bean mosaic,
Is surpassed its parent variety
in yield during tests in Huron
County, though both had about
the same yields when tested in
Kent County.
Michelite is still the highest
yielding full season variety in
Kent County and in portions of
Elgin, Lambton and Middlesex
counties, Dr. Clark reports.
Michelite is not as susceptible
to sunscalding as some other
varieties and it out -performs
Seaway and Sanilac under ad-
verse weather conditions.
