She answers letters of general interest.in this column but can't undertake personal replies,. DEAR DORIS—It was won- derful of you to contact your doctor friend about my niece. We were at wit's end about how to get her to go voluntarily into hospital. Before we could follow your advice, nature stepped in and took a hand. She had a com- plete breakdown and was taken into the mental cases ward o£ the hospital. Now she is coming along like a house afire. She has been given shock treatment and is a changed youngster. Remember how withdrawn and depressed she was? Well, according to reports she is getting real out- spoken. She will be home in 10 days but will remain on pills and visit the clinic but she is going back to school. And this al- most floored me: she is very anxious to get back! AUNTIE DEAR DORIS — Hallelujah! Now is the time to follow up with encouragement at home. She should be treated like a normal person—just like any- one recovering from any illness. No constant reminders to be careful; no talking about her in front of her. Private sessions with her toward good grooming, tidy hair (things which are let slide during illness). And some positive happy challenges that make her feel needed and com- petent. The reception she gets from friends and family now are all- important to her permanent re- covery. DEAR DORIS — My legs are bigger than the rest of me, especially the thighs. This is very embarrassing when wear- ing shorts and a bathing suit, because the largeness of my thighs shows up more than it does in slims, EMBARRASSED DEAR EMBARRASSED—You can do a lot with exercise and massage. I'm sending you a leaflet "Some Special Notes for Chubby Legs"; which describes some thigh -shapers, knee -shap- ers and flesh -thumpers. Regu- lar, faithful performance can turn a shapely limb. (Available to other readers for ten cents and a stamped, self-addressed envelope.) DEAR DORIS I am writing you to ask if you would have any literature for a debate on "Does or does not TV affect the child, and if so how?" DEBATER DEAR DEBATER—No print- ed literature; you'll find that in your library. But would you like my private two cents' worth? Pros: Educational half-hours help broaden the child's world; even commercials help with word and object recognition, letters and numbers. Outstand- ing artists—when we have them —stimulate an interest in good music. Cons: TV keeps little Witham rooted to one spot when he should be tearing around devel- oping his social consciousness even as he stretches and devel- ops his muscles, in play times LIKE ALWAYS SAY— YOU JUST CAN'T B EAT HOME COOKI ING 1 Combine your home-grown grains with WNAT!ONAL* CHICK CONCENTRATE the fresh mix with the meat meal base! Political partisanship was set aside as members on both sides paid warm tribute to the five members who celebrated their 25th consecutive years in the Commons. Prime Minister Pearson sent each of the members a red car- nation along with verbal trib- utes they received. Speaker Alan Macnaughton began by saying the most dif- ficult task for any Speaker is "naming" a member — a step taken in expelling an MP from the House. But he would name five members as long as the House would "waive the pro- visions of the expulsion rule." He then named Opposition Leader John Diefenbaker, 69; Privy Council president Mc- Ilraith, 56; Elston Cardiff, PC Huron, 76; Rymond Eudes, L - Montreal, 52; George E. Nixon, L -Algoma West, 67. All were elected March 26, 1940. Members on both sides joined in a round of applause as the names were given out. 0 Programing For Fertilizer Use Reduces Costs A sound fertilizing program, facilitated by soil testing, in- creases crop yields and, conse- quently, reduces the cost in production of each bushel or ton of feed. According to Professor T, H. Lane, soil science department, Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph, crop -fertilizer require- ment are influenced by the available farm resources -crop with his pals. And the scarcity of programs geared to his needs threatens to give him an un- balanced view of life—at a time when everything he hears and sees stimulates his imagination. To Insomnia — Sleeping pills, when prescribed .by a doctor, and taken just the way he says to, can do a tremendous amount of good. At the same time, no pill removes the worry or strain that caused the sleeplessness. And too much dependence on drugs equals an addiction, no matter how thin you slice it. residues, farm -yard manures, and legumes., Professor Lane relates, "A 100 -bushel corn yield will pro- duce 21 to 3 tons of corn stover, so only 50 pounds of additional nitrogen is needed to decompose these residues. Farm -yard manure, supplying nitrogen, phosphate, and pot- ash, is worth approximately $10 per 10 -ton application. Le- gumes, valuable sources of ni- trogen, too, will save some of the costs of commercial ferti- lizers. A good alfalfa crop, as an example, will supply 100 pounds of nitrogen." Fertilizer programs are flex- ible. Notrogen on corn, for ex- ample, can either be plowed down or preplanted in the spring. Phosphate and potash may also be plowed down, or they may be applied with the corn planter at planting time. Not all of the phosphate or potash has to be applied using one method, however, as part may be plowed •down and the rest distributed with the plant- er. Yet, Professor Lane cau- tions, "A sound fertilizer pro- gram on the farm should and must include the use of soil testing in order to make proper fertilizer decisions," 0 Place Fertilizer For Cereal Grains "Best placement of fertilizer for cereal grains is directly with the seed," states Dr. Murray Miller, soil science department, Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph. This method is more effective than placement to the side or above the seed. If a drill for placing fertilizer near the seed is not available, however, ad- vantages of this optimum place- ment do not justify the cost of a new drill. Instead, two altern- atives may be used. "Liquid fertilizer applied at the same rate, and in the same position, is as effective as dry fertilizer," says Dr. Miller. "For cereal grains, standard Iiquid fertilizers sold by the ton are equally as good as high-cost, liquid starter fertilizers." Seed drills can be easily and cheaply converted for this method. If liquid fertilizer is not available in the district. broad- cast dry fertilizer on the sur- face and plow down. Dr. Mil- ler stresses plowing down rather than discing. However, regard- less of the method used, he warns that only DIRECT fertili- zer application with ceral grains produces maximum results.
